Last week, Johnson County’s Suicide Prevention Coalition received the proceeds from a fundraising disc golf tournament — the Flippin’ Sweet Memorial Disc Golf Tournament for Prevention of Suicide.
The Mitts Family Foundation presented the county suicide coalition with a $12,000 check representing proceeds raised by the foundation’s fourth-annual memorial disc golf tournament in June. The Flippin' Sweet Suicide Prevention Memorial Disc Golf Tournament was created by Connor and Susan Mitts in memory of Grant Gottschalk and Tom Karlin — two lifelong friends who took their own lives. The event serves as a celebration of Grant and Tom’s lives and their love of disc golf, and it aims to increase awareness about suicide prevention. In 2016, the disc golf tournament partnered with Johnson County Mental Health’s Suicide Prevention Coalition to share their message with the entire region, donating all 2017 event proceeds to the coalition to assist in local prevention education. Since 2014, the memorial tournament has raised more than $25,000 for suicide prevention and depression awareness.
