Free income tax preparation available

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) hosted by El Centro and Johnson County K-State Research and Extension, provides free tax preparation and review to all Johnson County residents who make less than $60,000 per year. The service is operated by Next Step KC and supported by the United Way of Greater Kansas City.

All volunteers are certified and trained by the IRS. A recent IRS audit of the Sunset Drive Office Building VITA site awarded the site a perfect score of 100 percent compliance.

Visit the Sunset Drive Office Building, 11811 S. Sunset Dr. in Olathe, Conference Rooms 1070/1075 on Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. until April 14. People are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. New this year is a drop-off service on Saturdays where you can bring your documents in and drop them off for pickup later. Saturday, April 7 is the last day that service is available.

Spanish-speaking interpreters are available on site. Appointments are available for deaf clients in order to have a translator on site. For more information, you may call 913-715-7000 or view a recent Facebook Live interview with Family and Consumer Sciences agent Denise Dias. The extension website also provides important details on what you need to bring with you.
