Commercial Vehicles

A commercial vehicle is any self-propelled or towed motor vehicle in commerce that is used to transport property or passengers when the vehicle:

  1.  Has a gross weight or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more;
  2.  is designed or used to transport 15 or more passengers, including the driver; or
  3.  is used to transport hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placarding.

All commercial vehicle title and registration applications should be dropped off and/or picked up from 111 S. Instructions for Titling Commercial Vehicles

Required Documents:
 
New Vehicles

  • Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO)
  • Valid proof of insurance
  • Sales tax receipt or bill of sale, if sales tax exempt provide sales tax exemption number
  • Commercial Title Application, TR-212a
  • If you are using another establishment's safety USDOT number we will need:
    • Lease Agreement
    • Non-Motor Carrier Form
  • If the gross weight of the vehicle is more than 54,000 pounds we will need a stamped copy of your 2290, Schedule of Heavy Highway Vehicles

 Used Vehicles

  • Title
  • Valid proof of insurance
  • Sales tax receipt or bill of sale, if sales tax exempt provide sales tax exemption number
  • Lien release from previous owner’s lien holder if not released on the title
  • Out of state titles must have MVE-1 VIN (vehicle identification number) verification.
  • Commercial Title Application, TR-212a
  • If you are using another establishments safety USDOT number we will need;
    • Lease Agreement
    • Non-Motor Carrier Form
  • If the gross weight of the vehicle is more than 54,000 pounds we will need a stamped copy of your 2290, Schedule of Heavy Highway Vehicles.

 Work is processed first come first serve. Once your work is processed, a Johnson County Motor Vehicle Specialist will email your invoice to the email address on file.

Cash, Check, Visa, MasterCard, OR Discover
(credit cards will have a 2.6% service fee with a minimum of $3.00)

Renewal Instructions

*Please note, Johnson County will no longer process commercial vehicle renewals through drop-off, mail, or email effective December 1, 2018.

Instructions for renewing your commercial registration(s) online can be found here at: www.ksrevenue.org/pdf/trucking/IRPRenewalInst.pdf.

  • If you have purchased a new vehicle in a prior calendar year (for example 2018) it will need to be added to the current fleet before renewing. 
  • If the vehicle was purchased in the current calendar year (for example 2019) the fleet will need to be renewed before the vehicle can be added.
