Johnson County Courthouse project team provides new interior renderings, animation and a project update to Board of County Commissioners

New interior renderings and fly-through animation of the new Johnson County Courthouse are now available here. These materials as well as a project status report were presented to the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners, sitting as the Committee of the Whole, on Thursday, Oct. 25. Brad Reinhardt, Director of Facilities Management, presented the update with representatives from project team members JE Dunn, TreanorHL and Fentress Architects.

The new Johnson County Courthouse will be located across the street from the current courthouse at Santa Fe Street and Kansas Ave. The 354,000 square foot, seven-story building will have 28 courtroom spaces, with room to expand to 36 in the future. The overall budget for this project is $193 million. With the final design complete, construction costs total approximately $175 million.

In Thursday’s presentation the project team detailed accessibility features such as outside ramps, zero-stair entries and fully accessible courtrooms, the enhanced security of the building, the public service-oriented design, and the separation of inmates and criminal defendants from victims, witnesses and jurors which will be accomplished in the new courthouse. These are all areas of concerns with the current Johnson County Courthouse, opened in 1952.

The project team also presented the public art installation selected for this building. Johnson County Government’s Public Art Program provides a mechanism for the commissioning, financing and installing of public art pieces for the new construction and major renovations of selected county buildings. Out of 130 respondents, the Artist Selection Panel selected artist Benjamin Ball who has designed a multi-colored sculpture for the new courthouse entry that will be visible inside and outside the building.

The Committee of the Whole received a construction schedule, including a recap of what has occurred and what is planned for the future.
