Evening in the Park features concert, movie on Sept. 28

An Evening in the Park, with a free outdoor concert and movie showing, is scheduled Saturday, Sept. 28, in Shawnee Mission Park.

The special event by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District (JCPRD) features a 90-minute concert by the popular 1980’s tribute band the M80s, beginning at 6 p.m. A showing of the iconic 1980’s movie, “Back to the Future,” follows the concert. Both activities will be in the Theatre in the Park area of Shawnee Mission Park with a separate entrance at 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee. The entrance will open at 5 p.m. Gates into the bowl will open at 5:30 p.m.

September is National Deaf Awareness Month, and an interpreter will be on hand for staff remarks and closed captioning for the movie will be provided.

"The goal of this event is to thank our community for their engagement and support of JCPRD,” said Superintendent of Culture Susan Mong. “The weather will be cool, and we want everyone to enjoy a great Evening in the Park!”

Food will also be available for purchase during the event with seven food trucks offering sweet and savory options, as well as family-friendly concession items in the theater bowl.

The presentation of Evening in the Park follows a similar event called Park Palooza, which took place in September of 2017 and 2018.

“Park Palooza was a great event that provided informative booths to educate our public about various county services available to the public, and various entertainment offerings through the day,” Mong explained. “We decided to simplify the concept of the event with great music, a great movie and great food, and then Evening in the Park was born.”

An Evening in the Park will end at approximately 10 p.m.
