Johnson County observes Holocaust Remembrance Day

Today, Jan. 27, Johnson County observes International Holocaust Remembrance Day with a video of Judy Jacobs of Overland Park, Kansas.

A Holocaust survivor, Judy, then a child, and her parents were incarcerated in the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp in Germany. She had family members, including her grandparents, who were killed in Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp/infamous death camp and another Nazi-forced labor camp.

Her video was featured in the 2020 Johnson County Veterans Day celebration honoring World War II veterans and the 75th anniversary ending to the war and the Holocaust.

Holocaust Remembrance Day is an annual observance to commemorate the date when Auschwitz-Birkenau in occupied Poland was liberated in 1945. About 6 million Jews were killed by the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945.
