An older woman getting a vaccine at a clinic

Vaccine distribution moves to those 65+ and school special education staff next week

Johnson County Department of Health and Environment Director Dr. Sanmi Areola announced at the Jan. 28 Board of County Commissioners meeting the following vaccination plans for the week of Feb. 1:

  • Health care workers who are due for the second dose of vaccine have been contacted or will be contacted if their due date is later than Feb. 6. Appointments are being scheduled via a unique link.
  • The county will continue vaccinating any remaining persons in the 80+ population. Please complete the interest form. Those who have successfully completed the county’s interest form and have not been vaccinated will receive a follow-up email or phone call from the county on how to book an appointment. We are regularly monitoring our data to insure that everyone who takes this survey is being contacted when they are eligible for an appointment.
  • For the 65+ population, if they have been a patient at either Olathe Health or AdventHealth within the past three years, they will be contacted about appointments as the vaccine becomes available. These health systems are still booking appointments, but do not call for an appointment. You will be contacted by them.
  • Children’s Mercy will vaccinate K-12 public special education staff and Kansas School for the Deaf staff next week. Eligible staff should receive information from their school or district administration.
  • Next week, JCDHE will vaccinate first responders (fire, police and Sheriff’s Office.)
  • As this is monumental effort to undertake with very limited supplies of vaccine, we understand the level of frustration this has created in the community. Currently, JCDHE has a team of 6-8 people attempting to answer thousands of calls each day. Because we have received many voicemail messages from residents, the department has added volunteers to return those calls, as well as hired an additional nine contractors to assist with this effort next week.
