Job Shadow

The purpose of the Job Shadow Program is to provide opportunities to students and community members who are interested in pursuing a career in wastewater or the water sector. Job shadows will provide them with a realistic job preview and help them determine if a career in wastewater meets their skill set and goals.

Job shadows do not constitute a job interview nor any other part of the hiring process for Johnson County Government. Participants are not guaranteed employment but are welcomed to include the job shadow experience on future job applications with Johnson County Government if desired.

Dress

Participants are required to wear steel toed boots, jeans and a shirt for an O&M job shadow, in addition to any weather-appropriate outerwear. Johnson County Wastewater will supply a safety vest as well as gloves glasses and hardhat. For all other work areas, dress will be determined based on work area, and participants will be notified prior to the start of the job shadow.

Job Shadow

About

Have you ever wondered what it looks like to work in wastewater? If so, you may enjoy participating in a job shadow. A job shadow is an opportunity for a member of the public, including students and interns, to spend time with a JCW staff member to learn more about their job and will provide you with a realistic job preview.

Note: Job shadows are for educational purposes only, and do not constitute a job interview nor any other part of the hiring process for Johnson County Government. Job shadows are purely observational, and participants are not paid. Reimbursement of ancillary expenses, such as mileage, is not provided. Participants are responsible for their own personal expenses. Additionally, there is no cost or fee to participate in a job shadow. Job shadow placement is determined by staff availability and safety, among other factors. All applicants must agree to comply with all program procedures; local, state and federal laws, policies and procedures; and county policies.

Who should apply?

Any member of the public 16 years of age and older can apply to participate in a job shadow. Participants must be Johnson County residents unless they are a student or recent graduate (within the past year) from high school, high school equivalency, or any college or university.

Any person under the age of 18 years old must have permission from a parent or guardian.

Scheduling

Participants can sign up for a job shadow in four-hour blocks and can shadow each work area no more than once per calendar year, unless they are a JCW intern. It is the participant’s responsibility to arrive and leave on time.

Safety

All work areas are eligible to allow job shadow participants, so long as all safety protocols are followed. Participants who ride in a county-owned vehicle must provide valid, state-issued identification. Minors are not permitted to do ride-alongs (unless they are a current intern). Participants are not authorized to drive county vehicles. All participants will be given the necessary safety information.
