Commission on Aging

The Commission on Aging (COA) is a voluntary group of individuals appointed by the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) to provide information, guidance, advice and support to the Johnson County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and to serve as a liaison to the BOCC concerning the needs of older county residents and services to meet those needs.   Current COA members.

The Johnson County Commission on Aging (COA) is seeking candidates for the annual Peg Deaton Leadership in Aging Award, which honors individuals, groups, or organizations making outstanding contributions to the quality of life for older adults and their families in Johnson County. To request a nomination form, call the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) at 913-715-8860 or access the nomination form here. Nominations must be submitted by Wednesday, Aug. 3, to: Katy Hoffman, c/o Area Agency on Aging, 11811 S. Sunset Drive, Suite 1300, Olathe, KS 66061 or via e-mail to [email protected].

Recommendations from 2019 Aging Forum
As a result of the 2019 Aging Forum held last October, the COA has compiled the following recommendations to be presented to the Board of County Commissioners. These recommendations are a result of more than 11 focus groups and over 100 forum participants providing input and feedback regarding a wide variety of aging issues. 

Commission on Aging Meetings  are open to the public and held at 9:00 a.m. the second Wednesday of the month (except June and December) in Olathe. 

Until further notice COA Meetings will not be held in person in 2020, and  will be online ZOOM meetings due to the pandemic.  Also there will be no Legislative Breakfast this year...2020.

Peg Deaton Leadership in Aging Award - 2019  The annual Commission on Aging Peg Deaton Leadership in Aging Award honors individuals or groups or businesses for making outstanding contributions to the quality of life for older adults and their families in Johnson County.

The 2019 Award was presented to Patti Rule, a retired public health nurse, educator, senior advocate, and former Commission on Aging member.

COA Members attended “Older Kansans Day” at the Capitol on March 27th.  Older Kansans Day is an annual event which includes the AAAs around the State and their advisory board members, to meet with their respective Kansas Legislators.
