Local Scientist Advances Biosciences Career by Earning a Specialized Master’s Degree from K-State Olathe
Regina Muskeyvalley has a fulfilling job as a scientist at Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health USA Inc. but wanted to find ways to advance in her field. She decided to earn her Professional Science Master (PSM) in Applied Biosciences from K-State Olathe to do just that.
A unique, industry-focused graduate program that fuses advanced training in the sciences with leadership and managerial skills highly valued by employers, a PSM provides graduates with knowledge and skills needed for managerial or supervisory roles. This degree, one of only three in Kansas, is supported by the Johnson County Education Research Triangle. The program is offered entirely online, making it ideal for today’s busy learners.
We asked Regina about her decision to pursue her master’s degree and what it has meant to her career.
What is your educational background?
I have an undergraduate degree in biology with a minor in chemistry.
Why did you pursue the Professional Science Master in Applied Biosciences degree?
The program offered a wide range of classes I could tailor to my own interests. The online classes offered in the evenings allowed for flexibility while having a full-time job and family. The program offers a combination of professional-development courses as well as STEM classes to develop both hard and soft skills needed in a manufacturing career.
You’ve completed your degree. How has that contributed to your career advancement?
I was promoted twice while earning my degree and I’m now in a leadership role. This program helped develop my leadership and project-management skills and broadened my understanding of vaccine development. All these factors gave me more confidence in my knowledge and leadership abilities at work. I encourage anyone looking to advance in the scientific-manufacturing field to consider the applied biosciences program and K-State Olathe.
