Johnson County Detention Center lit up at night

The Central Booking Facility in Olathe originally opened in August of 1988 as a state-of-the-art facility utilizing the then new Direct Supervision method of inmate management by placing deputies inside the housing units having direct interaction with the inmates. Following the Principles of Direct Supervision, this method has become the norm in detention facilities throughout the country successfully reducing vandalism, assaults, and other crimes from within the facilities.

In July of 2000, the Adult Detention Center at New Century opened to accommodate the need for additional jail beds within the county. The new facility, also Direct Supervision, was nationally recognized as an award-winning design for impressive efficiency, safety standards, work environment and cost savings. The design received the 1996 American Institute of Architects (AIA), Kansas City Design Award of Merit and the 1997-1998 National AIA Architecture for Justice Design Citation.

In December 2009, Phase II of the New Century facility opened adding 554 additional beds to Johnson County’s jail system bringing the total number of available beds to 1081.

In January 2010, the Olathe facility closed to be remodeled into a Centralized Booking and Pre-Classification Center based upon the recommendations of internationally recognized criminal justice consultants Carter, Goble, and Lee. The facility re-opened in August of 2012, 24 years after its original opening as the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office – Central Booking. The facility now provides for a centralized location within the county that all Johnson County law enforcement agencies can bring their arrestees for incarceration.

Both facilities are accredited through the National Commission on Correctional Health Care and provide medical, mental, and dental health care to the inmate population to meet community standards of care. These services are provided through a contracted health care provider.

A variety of programs and services are offered to include substance abuse classes, religious programs, anger management, and work programs. A complete and modern law library is available to those inmates who wish to use it.

The staff of the Detention Bureau are well trained professionals who perform their duties in what is known as “the toughest beat in America” with integrity, pride and professionalism. The deputies and civilian staff are committed to serving our community and its citizens to make it a better place for everyone exemplifying the Sheriff’s Office motto of Duty-Honor-Service.
