Public invited to engagement meetings on new county courthouse

Johnson County Government invites the public to see early design concepts for the new Johnson County Courthouse next week during two public engagement sessions. Residents will have a chance to ask questions and provide feedback on the project.

The meetings are open to anyone interested in developments on the courthouse scheduled to open in spring 2021.

“Public involvement is vital to the success of the county’s courthouse project,” said Assistant County Manager Joe Waters. “The new courthouse will be highly visible in downtown Olathe and we hope the facility will serve as an anchor to the county seat’s development for many generations. We’re grateful to county residents for their interest in this project and we hope to have a productive conversation at our engagement sessions.”

The first public engagement meeting is set for 6 p.m. Feb. 6 at the County Administration building, 111 S. Cherry St. in Olathe, with a second session 6 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park.

Voters approved public safety sales tax funding in November 2016 to fund the new courthouse and medical examiner facility. Since the project was approved, design/builders led by JE Dunn Construction have been developing plan details, addressing parking needs and working with the city of Olathe to integrate the facility’s design into the current downtown landscape.

Site clearing and demolition began in fall 2017 and is ongoing.
