Deadlines Extended for Newly Purchased Vehicles

On Wednesday, July 8, 2020, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed Executive Order No. 20-55, which states that Kansas residents who have purchased a new or used vehicle after January 1, 2020 through May 31, 2020, will have an extended period to register their vehicle.  Temporary 60-day permits are further extended for these purposes.  The new order provides staggered deadlines for newly purchased vehicles.  For questions regarding when a newly purchased vehicle must be registered to avoid penalties, please see the schedule below:

January 1, 2020 - January 31, 2020	August 31, 2020
February 1, 2020 - February 29, 2020	September 30, 2020
March 1, 2020 – March 31, 2020	October 31, 2020
April 1, 2020 – April 30, 2020	November 30, 2020
May 1, 2020 – May 31, 2020	December 31, 2020

 

Vehicles purchased on or after June 1, 2020, will have 60 days from their purchase date to register the vehicle without penalties.

 

Title Drop Off Service for Newly Purchased Vehicles

While the Motor Vehicle offices are open to the public, we encourage you to utilize our Title Drop Off Service before coming to an office.  Residents can review and complete an application found at www.jocogov.org/residents/vehicles in order to title a recently purchased vehicle. Individuals should place all required original documentation with the application in an envelope. The envelope can be placed in one of our convenient and secure drop off boxes at our Mission and Olathe offices. Individuals will receive an email within 14 days with instructions on how to pay for the transaction. Payment can be made online or by mail. Receipts and registration information will be printed and mailed as soon as payment is received.

 

Registration Renewals Deadlines

Motor vehicle registration renewals for March, April, May and June must be renewed by Nov. 14, 2020.  Deadlines will not be extended beyond that point.  If you are a Johnson County resident, renewals can be paid online at www.jocogov.org/residents/vehicles , by mail at PO Box 29192, Shawnee Mission, KS 66201 or at a renewal kiosk located in one of our lobbies.  Registration renewals beginning with the month of July and going forward are required to renew within their regularly scheduled month.  As a reminder, registration renewal deadlines are based on the first letter of the registered vehicle owner’s last name.  A copy of the renewal schedule can be found at  www.jocogov.org/dept/treasury-and-financial-management/vehicle-tags-and-titling/vehicle-renewals. 

 

NEW Guidelines for In-Person Service

To be served in-person, you must have confirmation that you have secured a place in line on-line at www.jocogov.org/residents/vehicles.  Please understand that if the online system is no longer accepting additional customers, we have reached capacity and we encourage you to utilize our on-line, drop off or mail in options.  The office lobbies will be restricted to customers who have secured a place in line.  Face masks are required in public spaces.  

 

Dealer/Fleet services located at the County Administration Office in Olathe (111 S. Cherry Street, Suite 1500) will not reopen to the public. Dealerships, title service companies, and/or commercial registration customers can drop off or mail in their transactions.
