Airport back open after aircraft flips over on approach; no injuries reported

Airport Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Update: The Johnson County Executive Airport is back open. The local Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board continue to investigate.

An aircraft coming in for a landing at the Johnson County Executive Airport fell short of the runway and flipped over around 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1. Although Johnson County MED-ACT responded, there were no injuries.

The Cessna 182 was approaching Runway 18 when a reported engine failure led to the pilot gliding to the start of the runway. However, the plane fell short of the runway and flipped over before stopping. The unidentified pilot was flying alone from Newton, Kansas.

As is procedure, the airport will remain closed as the local Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board completes its investigation. It is unknown at this time how long the airport will remain closed.
