Planning Commission appointments

Purchase of a mobile command post
Authorized an increase in CIP project authority for the Sheriff’s Mobile Command Post in an additional amount not to exceed $400,000 and authorized a contract with Farber Specialty Vehicles for the purchase of a mobile command post per Omnia cooperative contract. Vote: Passed 7-0.
Bonds for airport improvements
Authorized the issuance, sale and delivery of tax-exempt General Obligation Internal Improvement Bonds, Series 2023A, of Johnson County for the purpose of providing funds to finance certain airport improvements related to the New Century Commerce Center in an aggregate principal amount of $11,730,000. Vote: Passed 7-0.
Bonds for airport improvements
Authorized the issuance, sale and delivery of taxable General Obligation Internal Improvement Bonds, Series 2023B, of Johnson County for the purpose of providing funds to finance certain airport improvements in an aggregate principal amount of $5,110,000. Vote: Passed 7-0.
Bonds for HHW and Med-Act projects
Authorized the acquisition, design, construction, equipping and furnishing of certain building and facility improvements and approved the issuance by the Public Building Commission of Johnson County of its Lease Purchase Revenue Bonds (Household Hazardous Waste & Med-Act projects in Olathe and Lenexa), Series 2023A, in the aggregate principal amount of $15,815,000. Vote: Passed 7-0.
Bonds for Merriam Plaza Library
Authorized the acquisition, design, construction, equipping and furnishing of certain building and facility improvements and approved the issuance by the Public Building Commission of Johnson County of its Lease Purchase Revenue Bonds (Merriam Plaza Library), Series 2023B, in the aggregate principal amount of $6,465,000. Vote: Passed 7-0.
Funding for water and wastewater projects
Authorized the allocation of Coronavirus SLFRF received from the U.S. Department of the Treasury in the amount of $3,967,300 for the purpose of funding water and wastewater infrastructure projects at the New Century Commerce Center. Vote: Passed 7-0.
Funding for Community Health Worker program
Approved applying for and accepting funding in an amount not to exceed $702,601.91 from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Workforce Development Program for the period between Dec. 1, 2023, and Nov. 30, 2027, to continue the Community Health Worker program that was established in 2021. Vote: Passed 6-1.

Contract for new air traffic control tower

“Rolling” Ribbon Cutting celebrated new bus route
On Friday, Aug. 4, a “rolling” ribbon cutting celebrated Johnson County’s newest bus route Route 487. This route began service on Monday, Aug. 7, and links the Lenexa City Center to the Mission Transit Center, traveling through downtown Overland Park and Prairie Village as the first east-west connecting route between 75th and 95th streets. The “rolling” ribbon cutting began in Olathe outside the Administration Building to recognize the BOCC’s funding allocation for the new route, and then traveled the actual bus route. Along the way, city and chamber officials and community members joined county officials and staff at ribbon cuttings in Lenexa, Overland Park, Prairie Village and Mission. Johnson County Fair provides opportunity for community connection
From July 31 to Aug. 5, the Johnson County Fair was in full swing at the fairgrounds in Gardner. At the Johnson County booth, visitors spun a wheel and answered questions about county facts and services to win a prize. At the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office booth, visitors could meet officers while kids could pick up “badges” (stickers) of their own. In yet another booth, Noxious Weed Director James Hoge shared information about how to identify and control noxious weeds in the county. Thank you to all of the county employees who worked at the county fair and the community members who engaged with us.
Lenexa plans public hearing on Redevelopment TIF Project Plan
The City of Lenexa will be conducting a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, to consider approving the adoption of Redevelopment TIF Project Plan 1L City Center Midas Dual Hotel Project in the City Center TIF District. The project plan is located on approximately 2.318 acres in the center block of 87th Street Parkway immediately west of Penrose Lane. Anticipated within this project plan is construction of a mixed-use building containing two hotels, commercial and retail space, and structure parking as well as associated infrastructure improvements. Contract to update Solid Waste Management Plan
Request for Proposal (RFP) 2023-037. Consider authorizing a contract with Burns and McDonnell, for the development of an update to the Johnson County Solid Waste Management Plan, at a cost not to exceed $133,500. This contract is for a period of one year, Sept. 1, 2023, to Aug. 31, 2024, with no option to renew.
