How you can celebrate Independence Day in Johnson County
Get your red, white and blue on! Independence Day is approaching next Tuesday, July 4. Whether it’s a parade, live concert or fireworks show, there are a variety of city-hosted events to celebrate America’s independence in Johnson County.
County offices will be closed on Tuesday, July 4 in observance of this federal holiday. County parks will remain open during normal hours. However, Shawnee Mission Park beach will close at 4 p.m. Kill Creek Marina will be closed.
Please celebrate the Fourth of July safely: wear sunscreen, drink plenty of water and watch over your grill, as Johnson County is experiencing abnormally dry (87%) or moderate drought (13%) conditions according to drought.gov. De Soto
De Soto is hosting its 4th of July Celebration and Fireworks Display on July 4 at Riverfest Park. Vendors will open and music will begin at 7 p.m. followed by a fireworks show at 9:45 p.m.
Edgerton
Edgerton’s 3rd of July event will take place the day before Independence Day, on July 3 at Martin Creek Park. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and includes a community picnic, DJ, inflatables and more. Fireworks will begin at 9:45 p.m.
Fairway/Roeland Park/Westwood
Fairway, Roeland Park and Westwood are putting on a joint fireworks show on July 3, starting at approximately 9:45 p.m. The show will be viewable from Bishop Miege High School.
Gardner
Gardner’s Independence Day Festival returns on July 4 for a night of music, food and fireworks. This year’s event features well-known country musicians Drew Green and Jameson Rodgers. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. at Celebration Park, with fireworks capping off the night at 10 p.m.
Lenexa
Lenexa is hosting several Fourth of July events on July 4. The morning begins at 7 a.m. with the annual Freedom Run, open to runners, walkers and strollers. The run includes a 5K and 10K and runs through Old Town Lenexa.
The Community Days Parade will follow the Freedom Run in Old Town Lenexa at 10 a.m. Additionally, the pet-friendly Paw-triotic Pet Parade takes place at Lenexa City Market from 9 a.m. to noon, with the parade for furry friends starting at 11 a.m.
Leawood
Leawood is hosting its Celebration in the Park on the Fourth of July. The free event takes place throughout the day at Leawood City Park. The Leawood Aquatic Center will be open from noon to 6 p.m., and activities, food and entertainment will begin at 6 p.m. Fireworks will close out the night at approximately 9:45 p.m.
Merriam
Merriam’s annual Flags 4 Freedom engagement will open July 1 and run for the full week through July 8. Volunteers will place United States flags at the Merriam Marketplace and along Merriam and Johnson Drive.
Olathe
Olathe is hosting several Fourth of July events. Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm will host a patriotic Family Fun Night on Thursday, July 6 from 6 to 10 p.m. The theme of the event is 1860s fireworks. The Olathe Civic Band will perform at 7:30 p.m., followed by a fireworks display at about 9:30 p.m.
On July 4, Beach Fest will take place at the Lake Olathe Swim Beach & Marina from noon to 2:30 p.m. Admission includes a sack lunch, Aqua Park use, boat rentals and more. The same day, Olathe’s Fireworks Show will start at dark (approximately 9:45 p.m.) and be viewable from the College Boulevard Activity Center.
Overland Park
The City of Overland Park is hosting its annual Star Spangled Spectacular on July 4 at Corporate Woods Founders Park. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. and will feature food trucks and music from Amanda Fish Band, The Suburbans and Run with It. The night will end with fireworks starting at approximately 9:45 p.m.
You can also celebrate the Fourth at Overland Park’s Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead. Independence Day at the Farm will run from 9 a.m. to noon on July 4 and features old-fashioned games and activities, as well as a pig calling contest and bike parade.
Prairie Village
VillageFest is Prairie Village’s Independence Day celebration, and it’s set for July 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 77th and Mission. A pancake breakfast will run from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the Harmon Park Pavilion for $6 a plate.
Free children’s activities will be available at the Municipal Campus from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., including bounce houses, face painting, a petting zoo and more. Additionally, swimming will be free at the Prairie Village Pool from noon to 6 p.m.
