Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Aug. 11-17:

Aug. 7 deadline - play begins Aug. 18 - Soccer: New Century Fieldhouse Men's Fall League (Ages 18 and Older) 

  • New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, 8 games, Sundays, Game times vary, $675 per team
  • Games are played Sunday afternoon and evening. League play has five field players plus the goalie. Activity number 39742. For questions, call 913-826-2850.

Aug. 11 - Summer season ends at Shawnee Mission Park Marina & Beach (All Ages)

  • 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa, + SMP Marina, will be open Saturday and Sundays through Sept. 1, while summer beach and marina seasons at Kill Creek Park, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe (All Ages) also end Aug. 11, hours, rental, and admission fees vary
  • The Shawnee Mission Park Marina will offer daily hours through Aug. 11, followed by weekend hours on Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 2. The Shawnee Mission Park Beach will also end its season on Aug. 11, as will beach and marina operations at Kill Creek Park. Marinas offer boat rentals, including canoes, pedal boats, kayaks, and paddleboards. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are recommended for the Shawnee Mission Park Marina, where boat rentals can be reserved online up to seven days in advance. Aug. 12 - Group Swim Lessons (Ages 6 Months and Older)

  • Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center, 17251 W. 87th St., Lenexa, day and beginning times vary, 15 classes in eight levels, beginning times vary, 8 30-min. sessions, $65 per child, $72 nonresidents
  • Morning classes available. Lesson levels include: Baby & Me, Tot & Me, Preschool A, Preschool B, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4. Most levels are assigned based on skill level rather than age. Find descriptions of swim levels, or use our Swim Level Assessment Form. Registration opens July 29.

Aug. 13 - Pickleball: Workshops: Put Aways (Ages 18 and Older)

  • Meadowbrook Park, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 5 to 6 p.m., $15 per person, $16 nonresidents
  • NEW! Designed for beginner and intermediate players who want to take their pickleball game to the next level. Basic knowledge and understanding of pickleball required. Equipment is not provided; space is limited. Activity number 39090. 

Aug. 14 - Bingo - Lemonade Stand (Ages 50 and Older)

  • New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Pkwy., near Gardner, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., $6 per person, $7 nonresidents
  • BINGO! Delight in food, prizes, fun and 12 games of bingo. Variety of prizes awarded including gift cards. Please pre-register at least one week in advance. Payment is required at time of registration. For the enjoyment of all participants, children are not permitted to attend 50 Plus bingos. Cost of admission covers snacks and staff time to administer the bingo program. No additional charge for bingo. Activity number 39051.

Aug. 14 - Special Interest: Not So Sweet Facts About Sugar (Ages 50 and Older)

  • Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 1 to 2:30 p.m., $5 per person, $6 nonresidents
  • NEW! Sugar seems to be in everything these days. Learn how to identify this sneaky ingredient in foods, why manufactures add it to food, and how we can work to reduce sugar intake. Program presented by K-State Extension. Activity number 38959.

Aug. 14 - Museum: Retro Storytime - “I Like to Live in the City” (All Ages) 

  • Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, All Ages, 10 to 10:45 a.m., $2 per person, $1.60 members.
  • Preschoolers love stories from long ago, read by a special guest from the 1950s All-Electric House! In this Little Golden Book from 1970, readers discover the sights and sounds of the city from balloons to parades to parks. Craft activity included after the story ends. Activity number 35146.

Aug. 14 - Early Learning: Cooks and Books (Ages 2-5 with an Adult)

  • Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave, Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., $4 per person, $5 nonresidents
  • Enjoy the reading of a favorite children’s book then make a tasty treat! Program includes snack. Activity number 39219.

Aug. 15 - Games: S'mores and Stories (Ages 50 and Older)

  • Meadowbrook Park Fire Ring near Shelter #3, 9101 Nall Ave, Prairie Village, 6 to 7:30 p.m., $12 per person, $13 nonresidents
  • Join us for an evening around the fire ring at Meadowbrook Park. This cozy gathering promises an evening filled with conversation, story-telling, and a s'mores station. Please bring a lawn chair! Activity number 39050.

Aug. 17 - Once in a Blue Moon Hike (Ages 8 and Older with an Adult)

  • Gary L. Haller Trail parking on Barkley Drive across from Shelter 8 in Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Olathe, 8:30 to 10 p.m., $10 per person including adults, $11 nonresidents 
  • NEW! By the light of the blue moon, join us for a quiet hike to connect with nature and the night sounds. Let your eyes adjust to the moonlight and experience the park after dark. The blue moon hike will happen even with an overcast sky or light rain. In case of severe weather, this program will be cancelled and refunded. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. Aug. 17 - Special Events: JCPRD Kids Triathlon (Ages 14 and Under)

  • Kill Creek Park, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe, 8 a.m. to Noon, fees vary. NOTE: As a result of this event, Kill Creek Park will not open for public use until Noon on this date)
  • This youth triathlon is specifically designed to let the kids be the stars of the show. Athletes will compete in individual age groups in this race that is truly an event for all abilities. Athletes will compete in the age group that corresponds with their age on Dec. 31 of the current year. Events offered include a Tots Triathlon for ages 5 and under, a Super Sprint Triathlon for ages 6-8, a Sprint Triathlon for ages 9-10, and a Long Triathlon for ages 11-14. The JCPRD Kids Triathlon is a USA Triathlon sanctioned and Paratriathlon Friendly event. Register for this event online.
