Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Aug. 25-31:

Aug. 16 registration deadline (event runs Sept. 8-28) - Kansas City Corporate Challenge Fall Series (Ages 19 & Older)

  • Various locations, dates, and times, $1,250 per team
  • KCCC’s fourth-annual Fall Series is open to all KC metro companies regardless of participation in the 2024 KCCC. This is a great way for your associates, friends, and family to engage in some friendly and healthy competition this fall. The series will involve eight events; 5K, cornhole, adventure race, horseshoes, sand volleyball, pickleball, bowling, and basketball skills. Organizers anticipate this event will sell out at 30 companies (minimum 20). For more information, call the KCCC Office at 913-831-2222.

Aug. 20 - Art: Soap Carving (Ages 16 & Older)

  • Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 6 to 8:30 p.m., 2 sessions, $59 per person, $65 nonresidents
  • NEW! - Join us for a hands-on series where you'll learn the techniques of transforming ordinary bars of soap into stunning works of art. Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this class is perfect for anyone eager to explore their creativity in a unique medium. Activity number 39489.

Aug. 26 - Art: Senior Arts Council (Ages 55 & Older)

  • Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., 1 to 3 p.m., monthly on the last Monday of each month through August, $25 annual fee, pay at the door
  • Meet fellow artists and enthusiasts by becoming a member of the Senior Arts Council. Meetings include presentations by a featured artist, workshops, or demonstrations. An invitation for membership is extended for those 55 and older; visitors welcome. Members have the opportunity to display and sell their works at various exhibits. Activity number 38975. 

Aug. 27 - Technology: Workshop for Privacy Settings & Avoiding Scams (Ages 50 & Older)

  • Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 10 a.m. to Noon, $21 per person, $25 nonresidents
  • This class focuses on how to manage your privacy settings on your device and tips on how to avoid a scam. Activity number 39103. 

Aug. 28 - Early Learning: Silly Sensory Walk (Ages 1-4 with Adult)

  • Meadowbrook Park - Shelter #1, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., $4 per person, $5 nonresidents
  • Explore the park with a group and find fun and tactile ways to interact along the way! Limit of two children per adult. Activity number 39223.

Aug. 29 - Special Event: Live Well Age Well Expo 2024 (Ages 50 & Older)

  • Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., FREE
  • Live Well Age Well is an opportunity for residents of Johnson County and the greater metro to engage with businesses and organizations serving aging adults and their loved ones. This free event features a vendor fair, health screenings, education sessions, bingo, and other giveaways. Spend the day discovering new ways to live and age well in our community. Aug. 29 - Museum: Free to Be... Behind the Scenes Tour (Ages 16 & Older)

  • Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 6 to 7 p.m., $8 per person or $6.40 for museum members
  • Step back in time with a curator-led tour of our latest special exhibit "Free to Be...A 1960s Fashion Revolution." But the adventure doesn't stop there - participants will also enjoy a behind-the-scenes visit to our collections storage space, where you can view items from the museum's collection not currently on display. Aug. 30 - Special Interest: Simple Home Modifications to Age in Place (Ages 50 & Older)

  • Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10:30 to Noon, $5 per person, $6 nonresidents
  • Modifications to a home can allow a person to age in place. This presentation will guide you through no-cost to low- cost strategies for independent living at home easier and safer. Program presented by K-State Extension. Activity number 39014.
