A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

July 26 - deadline, play begins Aug. 6, 7, 8 - (5 separate leagues) Volleyball: Roeland Park Adult Leagues Summer Session 2 (Ages 18 and Older)

  • Roeland Park Sports Dome, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, Game times vary, 6 sessions, $180 per team
  • Can you dig it? Play volleyball at the recreational, intermediate, or power level. All leagues will play by current high school rules. The winning team in each league will receive T-shirts and bragging rights. Summer 2 leagues include Tuesday Coed Intermediate, activity number 40180; Tuesday Womens Power, activity number 40181; Wednesday Womens Intermediate, activity number 40182; Thursday Coed Intermediate, activity number 40183; and Thursday Coed Recreation, activity number 40184. 

Aug. 5 - Special Populations: Dance Fit 21 Session D (Ages 14 and Older)

  • Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., 6 to 7 p.m., 4 sessions, $20 per person
  • In this popular activity, instructor Halie will lead the group in a full-body, Zumba©-type workout that features popular and upbeat songs. This activity will help improve endurance, offer the opportunity for new friendships, and lots of fun! Activity number 39208. JCPRD’s Special Populations programs provide fun, educational and socializing activities for members of the Johnson County community with special needs.

Aug. 5 - Museum: Sensory Friendly Monday (All Ages)

  • Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 9 a.m. to noon, $4 per person for ages up to 18, $6 per person for ages 18 to 59, and $5 per person for ages 60 and older
  • Come enjoy the Johnson County Museum and KidScape in a comfortable, low-sensory environment. This limited-occupancy session is designed specifically for children with sensory processing differences and Autism Spectrum Disorders, and their families. We welcome visitors of all abilities and museum experience. We also welcome hand fidgets, comfort items, weighted blankets and vests, and mobility devices. Activity number 35151. Aug. 5, 7, 9 (3 separate programs) - Pickleball: Pickleball 101 (Ages 18 and Older) 

  • Meadowbrook Park Pickleball Courts, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, times vary – see below, 4 sessions, $52 per person, $55 nonresidents
  • Learn all things pickleball! This four-week course is great for new and beginning players. Each week will focus on a new topic covering all the basics like terminology, scoring, rules, serving, strategy and more. Equipment not provided, bring your own paddle. Aug. 5-9 - Biking: Buddy Pegs Pedal Champ Camp (Ages 5-10)

  • Thomas S. Stoll Park, 12500 W. 119th St., Overland Park, 9 a.m. to noon, 5 sessions, $275 per person, $302 nonresidents
  • Pedal Like a Champ Camp is a unique biking adventure for young pedalers, welcoming cyclists from all walks of life and catering to a wide range of skill levels. From beginners learning to pedal to those shredding through challenging trails, our vibrant Bicycle Playgrounds provide the perfect backdrop. We champion a space where every aspiring cyclist can evolve and flourish together, be it mastering their first pedal strokes, learning safe street riding skills, or fine-tuning their expertise. Join us for a week of bike adventures, where campers will become pedal pros by mastering skills like braking, gear shifting, safe group riding, and even conquering new terrains based on their ability level. With a mix of on-the-bike and off-the-bike activities, they enhance their biking prowess, learn the secrets of bike maintenance and safety checks, and enjoy bike-themed games while forging lasting friendships. Aug. 5-9 - Dance: Dare to Dance Camp - Taylor's Version (Ages 10-14)

  • The 'Dare to Dance Camp – Taylor's Version' is tailored for passionate young dancers. Each day embodies a different era in Taylor's career, exploring dance styles complementing her music – from 'Country Taylor' to 'Reputation' and 'Lover' eras. Dive into line dancing, hip-hop, jazz, ballet, and contemporary genres. Campers learn choreographies while immersing in Taylor's music, history, and style, fostering self-expression and creativity. Aug. 5-9 - Music: Broadway Workshop Camp - This Summer at the Park (Ages 8-12)

  • Join us for an exhilarating journey through the best of Broadway. Experience the magic of "Sister Act," "Hello, Dolly," "Anastasia," "Bye Bye Birdie," and "Anything Goes," showcased at Theatre in the Park this summer. Aspiring performers will shine both individually and as part of a dynamic ensemble, mastering the art of storytelling through song and dance.   • Unleash your creativity by embodying beloved characters, exploring the performing arts, and refining performance skills at this camp. Design your rebel base, master light saber stage combat, and explore a galaxy far, far away. Bring your cherished tales to life through diverse performing arts activities, ensuring an unforgettable journey through the wonders of Star Wars and the stage! The camp concludes with a sharing for friends and family. Experience the cosmos with the Ernie Miller Nature Center Planetarium. The adventure culminates in a special parent showcase on the final day. Activity number 33819.

Aug. 6 -  Gardening: Curb Appeal (Ages 50 and Older) 

  • Virtual Program, 2 to 3 p.m., FREE
  • What is this plant? How do I grow or do this? What should I put in my garden? So many questions and no one to ask until now. Join the K-State Extension Office on a variety of gardening topics and be free to discuss your gardening questions with a Master Gardener. Activity number 38998.

Aug. 6, 8 (2 separate programs) - Open Water Swim Training (Ages 18 and Older)

  • Shawnee Mission Park Beach, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa, 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., $10 per person, $12 nonresidents
  • Looking to train for an upcoming triathlon or to change up your swim workout? JCPRD offers open water swim training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Shawnee Mission Park Beach. All swimmers should be able to swim 500 meters freestyle and have endurance to swim in open water conditions and must bring and wear their tow buoy float at all times while in the water. Lifeguard will be on duty. All participants must be pre-registered by 10 a.m. on the day of the training. A minimum number of participants must be registered or the practice will be canceled. If a participant is registered for a canceled practice date, a full refund will be given. Aug. 6 session activity number 35173, and Aug. 8 session activity number 35158. 

Aug. 7 - Yoga: Rise and Shine Yoga (Ages 16 and Older)

  • Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, Wednesdays, 6 to 7 a.m., 4 sessions, $36 per person, $40 nonresidents
  • Start your day with an invigorating yoga practice at Ernie Miller Nature Center. This is yoga for anybody. All are welcome, no experience necessary! This class will focus on gentle stretching, serenity, and rejuvenation, and will be tailored to individual abilities. Please bring your mat to class. Meet at the parking lot flagpole to walk into the building together at 6 a.m. Instructor is Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher Robin Olson. Activity number 39956. 

Aug. 7 - Alzheimer's: Know the 10 Warning Signs (Ages 50 and Older)

  • Learn about typical age-related brain changes, common warning signs of Alzheimer's, how to approach someone about memory concerns, early detection, the benefits of early diagnosis and the diagnostic process. Learn how to recognize common signs of Alzheimer’s and dementia; how to approach someone about memory concerns; importance of early detection and benefits of diagnosis. Aug. 8 - Pickleball: Pickleball 102 (Ages 18 and Older) 

  • Meadowbrook Park Pickleball Courts, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, Thursdays, 9 to 10:30 a.m., 4 sessions, $52 per person, $55 nonresidents
  • Have you taken pickleball 101 and ready for the next step? If yes, this class is for you. You will continue to work on all the basics of the game while enhancing your game to the next level. Activity number 39084.

Aug. 8 - Bingo - BingOlympics (Ages 50 and Older)

  • Meadowbrook Park, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., $6 per person, $7 nonresidents
  • BINGO! Delight in food, prizes, fun and 12 games of bingo. Variety of prizes awarded including gift cards. Please pre-register at least one week in advance. Payment is required at time of registration. For the enjoyment of all participants, children are not permitted to attend 50 Plus Bingos. Cost of admission covers snacks and staff time to administer the bingo program. No additional charge for bingo. Activity number 39062.

Aug. 8 - Cards: Bridge Workshops - Rule of 20 (Ages 50 and Older) 

  • Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 9 to 11 a.m., $13 per person, $14 nonresidents
  • Become an in-demand partner with these bridge workshops. Fun and easy classes help you master a new subject each week. Purchase each workshop individually or take them all! Workshops include hands-on instruction and handouts to take home. In this session, we’ll learn the Rule of 20: when you're sitting in the first or second chair, do you open the bidding or pass? Aug. 9 - Special Event: Gamin’ with the Grandkids (Ages 5 and Older with 50 and Older)

  • Tomahawk Ridge Community Center, 11902 Lowell, Overland Park, 1:30 to 3 p.m., $8 per person, $9 nonresidents
  • Who’s up for some summertime fun? Beat the heat and dive into a world of fun and games with icebreakers, bingo, dance parties, and more! Join us for a refreshing experience filled with laughter and excitement. Light refreshments served. Cost of admission covers food and staff time to administer the bingo program. Aug. 5-8 - Sports: Tennis Camp (Ages 6-8)

  • R Park, 5535 Juniper Dr., Roeland Park, 9 a.m. to Noon, 4 sessions, $145 per person or $160 nonresidents
  • Whether your child is a beginning or intermediate player, this camp will improve their game and help them get more enjoyment from tennis. Camps focus on skill refinement as well as practice and match play to develop consistent, well-rounded tennis players. Activity number 39525.

Aug. 10 - Lanesfield Historic Site - Open Hours (All Ages)

  • 18745 S. Dillie Road, Edgerton, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month, FREE
  • The limestone schoolhouse, the last remaining structure in the former town of Lanesfield, is the oldest operating schoolhouse in Johnson County. Students attended from 1869-1963 when the school closed. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The site today includes the original schoolhouse, four outbuildings, and a modern visitors center that houses the exhibit One-Room Schools in Kansas, a museum store and restrooms. Aug. 10 - Fishing: Overnight Saturdays after 11 pm (All Ages)

  • Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., permit fees vary
  • The park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park and Recreation District fishing permit, trout permit if fishing for trout and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable.
