JCPRD weekly program highlights: Dec. 18-24

Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities and special events for all ages!

To register by phone, call 913-831-3359. For all in-person programs, physical distancing and COVID-19 safe practices will be encouraged.

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here's a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Dec 18-24:

Dec. 19-21 - Soccer: Winter Break Soccer Camp (Ages 3-5, 6-8, & 9-11)

  • New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Monday through Wednesday - times vary - see below, three sessions,  cost varies - Come be a part of this three-day winter break soccer camp. Coaches from Exceed Futbol will be instructing the camp and will cover the basics of soccer with fun drills and games each day. Each child should bring their own soccer ball, wear shin guards, long socks, and soccer cleats or tennis shoes, and bring a water bottle. For ages 3-5, camp will meet from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. daily, cost is $50 per person, activity number 23976. For ages 6-8, camp will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m. daily, cost is $65 per person, activity number 23977. For ages 9-11, camp will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m. daily, cost is $65 per person, activity number 23978. For questions, call 913-826-2850.

Dec. 19-23 - Art Labs: Character Drawing Camp (Ages 11-17)

  • Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 9 to 4 p.m., five sessions, $195 per person, $214.50 nonresidents - If you like to create characters and draw them out, this camp is for you. We'll explore figure drawing in different styles including anime and graphic novel styles. Students are encouraged to bring examples of previous characters to class with them. Dec. 20 - Reading: Wanderlust Book Club - “Traveling Light” (Ages 50 & Older) 

  • Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 2 to 3 p.m., $5 per person, $6 nonresidents - Intertwine your love of travel and a good book with a travel-themed book club. Each month, enjoy the selected book from the list and conclude the month at the clubhouse with a group discussion on how it relates to your travel and how it may inspire your Wanderlust. This month’s book is “Traveling Light” by Lynne Branard. Driving from North Carolina to New Mexico with her three-legged dog, a strange man’s ashes and a waitress named Blossom riding shotgun isn’t exactly what Alissa Wells ever wanted to be doing. But it’s exactly what she needs...it all starts when Alissa impulsively puts a bid on an abandoned storage unit, only to become the proud new owner of Roger Hart’s remains. Two weeks later, she jumps in her car and heads west, thinking that returning the ashes of a dead man might be the first step on her way to a new life. Activity number 23085. 

Dec. 20 - Cards: Bridge Workshops - Counting at Bridge (Ages 50 & Older) 

  • Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 4 to 5:30 p.m., $10 per person, $11 nonresidents - Become an in-demand partner with these bridge workshops. Fun and easy classes help you master a new subject each week. Purchase each workshop individually or take them all! Workshops include hands on instruction and handouts to take home. Dec. 20 - Holiday Event: Jingle Mingle (Ages 50 & Older) 

  • Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., $15 per person, $16 nonresidents - Let’s have a little fun this holiday season! Enjoy an afternoon of fun holiday games, spirited tunes and festive treats. Don’t forget to bring an item from home you would like to re-gift for the white elephant exchange. Activity number 23277.

Dec. 21 - Family Fun: Family Bingo - Holiday B-I-N-G-HO-HO-HO (All Ages)

  • Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., $12 per person, $13 nonresidents, 20% discount for additional participants - Looking for a fun, family event during winter break? Let’s play everybody’s favorite game B-I-N-G-O with a holiday twist! We’ll be singing and laughing all the way! Pizza lunch served at 11:30 a.m., bingo to follow. Activity number 23157. Cost of admission covers food and staff time to administer the bingo program. No additional charge for bingo.

Dec. 21 - Games: Bingo - Up to Snow Good (Ages 50 & Older)

  • Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., $5 per person, $6 nonresidents - BINGO! Delight in food, prizes, fun and 12 games of bingo. Variety of prizes awarded including gift certificates. Please pre-register at least one week in advance. For the enjoyment of all participants, children are not permitted to attend 50 Plus Bingos. Activity number 23241. Cost of admission covers food and staff time to administer the bingo program. No additional charge for bingo.

Dec. 21, 22, & 23 - Museum: Kids' Day Out (Ages 6-10)

  • Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., $38 per person - Come have fun when school is out! Discover history through hands-on activities and exploration of KidScape and museum exhibits, play games and enjoy down time. Bring a lunch, snacks, and water bottle and dress for the weather - we will go outside if we can. We are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but you may drop off and pick up at any time. Five-year-old children can be enrolled if currently attending kindergarten. Dec. 21 - Preschool Storytime: Animal Tales - Visit from Santa (Ages 2-6 with an Adult)

  • Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, 10:30 to 11 a.m., $3 per person - Join a park naturalist for animal stories and surprises geared for preschool age children. Come listen, learn and meet a special animal friend every time. All children must be accompanied by a paying adult. Program held indoors. Activity number 23457. 

Dec. 23 registration deadline - play begins Jan. 5 - Volleyball: NCF Thursday Women's Power League (Ages 18 & Older)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Thursdays, times vary, 8 sessions, $235 per team - This Thursday night league will play eight games through Feb. 23. Activity number 24127. Find more information online or by calling 913-826-2850.
