Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

July 22 - Registration begins for JCPRD’s September through December Program Season (All Ages) 

  • See JCPRD.com/Activities or call 913-831-3559 - Plan now for a fun-filled fall and winter with more than 500 programs for toddlers through senior adults. You’ll also find a fun assortment of special events. To keep up on the latest happenings at JCPRD, like our Facebook page, and / or subscribe to our free newsletters.  

July 28 - Kansas Kips Olympic Gymnastics Watch Party (Ages 3-17)

  • Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., $10 per person suggested entry fee at the door - NEW! Join us for an Olympic Gymnastics Watch Party! Children will be able to watch their favorite athletes compete in the largest gymnastic competition in the world on one of the largest screens at Mill Creek Activity Center! Low cost pizza slices and sweet treats from Kona Ice will be available for purchase. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult for the entirety of the program. Activity number 39924. All proceeds from this event go directly to supporting the Kansas Kips Gymnastics Team.

July 29 - Art: Senior Arts Council (Ages 55 and Older)

  • Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., 1 to 3 p.m., monthly on the last Monday of each month through August, $25 annual fee, pay at the door - Meet fellow artists and enthusiasts by becoming a member of the Senior Arts Council. Meetings include presentations by a featured artist, workshops, or demonstrations. An invitation for membership is extended for those 55 and older; visitors welcome. Members have the opportunity to display and sell their works at various exhibits. Activity number 38974. 

July 29-Aug. 1 - Sports: Cheerleading Camp (Ages 5-12)

  • Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, 1 to 4 p.m., 4 sessions, $145 per person, $160 nonresidents - This class teaches young athletes the essential skills to lead the crowd and support the home team! Each participant will learn cheers, proper hand/body movements and jumping techniques. There is no stunting, just a big focus on fun while each cheerleader learns important life skills such as teamwork and leadership. The program concludes with a final cheer performance. July 29-Aug. 2 (2 separate classes) -  Buddy Pegs: Learn to Pedal Camp (Ages 5-10)

  • Meadowbrook Park, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village or Theatre in the Park Parking Lot, 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee, 9 a.m. to noon, 5 sessions, $275 per person, $302 nonresidents - Learn to Pedal camps are perfect for kids who are not yet pedaling on two wheels (without the aid of training wheels). Even though many children start the week timid and reluctant, most campers will be pedaling confidently on their own by day two thanks to our compassionate, patient, and FUN coaches. This week-long camp is run by certified Buddy Pegs coaches who will work hard to ensure that all kids individually progress in their skills and double their excitement for biking throughout the week! July 29-Aug. 2 - Buddy Pegs Pedal Champ Camp (Ages 5-10)

  • Theatre in the Park Parking Lot, 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee, 9 a.m. to noon, 5 sessions, $275 per person, $302 nonresidents - Pedal Like a Champ Camp is a unique biking adventure for young pedalers, welcoming cyclists from all walks of life and catering to a wide range of skill levels. From beginners learning to pedal to those shredding through challenging trails, our vibrant Bicycle Playgrounds provide the perfect backdrop. We champion a space where every aspiring cyclist can evolve and flourish together, be it mastering their first pedal strokes, learning safe street riding skills or fine-tuning their expertise. Join us for a week of bike adventures, where campers will become pedal pros by mastering skills like braking, gear shifting, safe group riding and even conquering new terrains based on their ability level. With a mix of on-the-bike and off-the-bike activities, they enhance their biking prowess, learn the secrets of bike maintenance and safety checks, and enjoy bike-themed games while forging lasting friendships. Join us for an exhilarating biking adventure, promising an all-encompassing experience for pedal champions at every level! Participants may bring their own bike or rent a bike - bike rental not included in registration fee. Activity number 34320.

July 29-Aug. 2 - Amazing Adventures Camp (Ages 13 and 14)

  • TimberRidge Adventure Center, 12300 S. Homestead Lane, Olathe, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., 5 sessions, $225 per person, $250 nonresidents - Survival skills, archery, BB guns, boating, climbing, fishing… it all sounds so good! No need to choose just one. At the Amazing Adventures Camp, you will do a little bit of everything! With an extra day, we’ve added extra fun, including a cookout every Friday! We are sure you will enjoy spending time this summer experiencing the many amazing camp activities TimberRidge Adventure Center has to offer. Camp drop-off and pick-up are at the Whispering Pines Shelter at TimberRidge Adventure Center, and campers will stay at TimberRidge Adventure Center during camp. There is no before and after care provided for this camp. Camp forms will be completed in ePACT, and each participant will need a health and liability form signed by a parent or guardian. July 29-Aug. 2 - Challenge Island: Road Trip USA (Ages 6-11)

  • Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 9 a.m. to noon, 5 sessions, $175 per person, $195 nonresidents - Rev up your RV for a cross country STEAM adventure! You and your team will engineer your way from sea to shining sea from the Statue of Liberty to the Golden Gate Bridge; from the Hawaiian volcanoes to the Floridian theme parks; to an open road of exciting pit-stops in between. This imagination-fueled excursion across the USA promises to have campers smiling from coast to coast! Activity number 34645. 

July 29-Aug. 2 - Play Well: Minecraft Engineering with LEGO Materials (Ages 5-7)

  • Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 9 a.m. to Noon, 5 sessions, $210 per person, $230 nonresidents - Venture into the world of Minecraft® in our unique LEGO® experience. Get ready to build your base, craft your tools, use your Minecart to harvest raw resources and battle to stop the Ender Dragon from ending the world. Come explore the endless possibilities of LEGO® with a trained Play-Well instructor. Activity number 34657.

July 29-Aug. 2 - Play Well: Minecraft® Master Engineering with LEGO® Materials (Ages 7-12)

  • Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 1 to 4 p.m., 5 sessions, $210 per person, $230 nonresidents - Bring your favorite Minecraft® adventures to life with our enthusiastic Play-Well instructors. In a Minecraft world powered by LEGO® resources, we will build shelters to keep out Creepers, craft mystical items that only true masters can wield, and perfect our crossbow skills to stop the Wither from taking over! July 30 - Movies in the Park: “Barbie” (Rated PG-13) 

  • Theatre in the Park in Shawnee Mission Park with a separate entrance at 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee, Gates and Box Office open at 8 p.m., movie starts between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m., depending on sunset, $1 per person - 5th of 5 - Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans. 

July 30 - Special Interest: Eating Healthy on a Budget (Ages 50 and Older) 

  • Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 10 to 11 a.m., $5 per person, $6 nonresidents - NEW! Eating nutritious foods which are good for your health does not have to be expensive. These days it seems harder to stay within a budget. Learn tips and tricks to stretch your food dollars while maximizing nutrition. Program presented by K-State Extension. Activity number 39112.

July 30-Aug. 1 - Volleyball: New Century Fieldhouse Summer Camp (Ages 8-14)

  • New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner,  1:30 to 3:30 p.m., 3 sessions, $65 per person, $70 nonresidents - Get in the game by participating in this three-day summer break volleyball camp held at New Century Fieldhouse in Gardner. Girls and boys entering grades 3 - 8 can participate in the camp and will be split up into groups by grade and ability level as best as the coaches can. Coaches from KC Fire Volleyball Club will run the camp. Serving, passing, setting, hitting, fun drills and games will all be covered. Each participant will receive a t-shirt.  Activity number 35052. July 30, Aug. 1 (2 separate programs) - Open Water Swim Training (Ages 18 and Older)

  • Shawnee Mission Park Beach, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa, 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., $10 per person, $12 nonresidents - Looking to train for an upcoming triathlon or to change up your swim workout? JCPRD offers open water swim training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Shawnee Mission Park Beach. All swimmers should be able to swim 500 meters freestyle and have endurance to swim in open water conditions and must bring and wear their tow buoy float at all times while in the water. Lifeguard will be on duty. All participants must be pre-registered by 10 a.m. on the day of the training. A minimum number of participants must be registered or the practice will be canceled. If a participant is registered for a canceled practice date, a full refund will be given. July 30 session activity number 35172, and Aug. 1 session activity number 35158.

Aug. 1 - Day Travel: Glass and Gardens (Ages 50 and Older)

  • Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., $149 per person, $164 nonresidents - Travel to Kechi, Kan., just minutes from Wichita to discover the blazing world of blown glass. Watch a demonstration of glass blowing and choose to create your own masterpiece, then marvel at stunning pieces in their museum and gift shop. After lunch, visit Botanica, Wichita’s botanical garden, with more than 30 gardens, exhibits, gardenscapes, sculptures and fountains. Hot weather alternative for Botanica is Museum of World Treasures. This trip includes motorcoach transportation, 50 Plus escort, all tour costs, lunch and gratuity. Make-your-own glass blowing at the cost of traveler. Moderate walking and standing are to be expected. Activity number 38946.

Aug. 2 registration deadline, event Aug. 16 - Pickleball: 50 Plus - New Century Classic Tournament (Ages 50 and Older)

  • New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., $31 per person - Showcase your competitive spirit at this one-day, indoor pickleball tournament at New Century Fieldhouse. The tournament will feature six courts for play for gender and mixed divisions with ratings of 3.0, 3.5, 4.0+. Awards are presented to first, second, and third place in each division. All players must be 50 years of age by Dec. 31, 2024. Activity number 39745. Aug. 3 - Special Interest: AARP Smart Driver Course (Ages 50 and Older)

  • Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Pay with check at the door made out to AARP - $20, $25 non-AARP members - Keep driving skills sharp and lower insurance rates at the same time! Completing an AARP Smart Driver Course can mean a discount with some insurance companies. No tests given, please bring your AARP membership card. Reserve your spot, space is limited!
