Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of May 5-11:

May 6 - Museum: Sensory Friendly Monday (All Ages)

  • Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 9 a.m. to Noon, $4 per person for ages up to 18, $6 per person for ages 18 to 59, and $5 per person for ages 60 and older - Come enjoy the Johnson County Museum and KidScape in a comfortable, low-sensory environment. This limited-occupancy session is designed specifically for children with sensory processing differences and Autism Spectrum Disorders, and their families. We welcome visitors of all abilities and museum experience. We also welcome hand fidgets, comfort items, weighted blankets and vests, and mobility devices. Activity number 35148. May 6 & 7 (four separate classes) - Dance: 50 Plus Tap - Beginning, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced (Ages 50 and Older)

  • Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, days, times vary (see below), 6 sessions, $49 per person, $54 nonresidents - Learn basic tap fundamentals such as the Waltz, Clog, and Rhythm Time Steps in Beginner Tap. Stomp, shuffle, and stamp your way to the next level with Intermediate. Test out of Intermediate for Advanced. Hard-soled or tap dance shoes required. No previous tap dance necessary for Beginner. Meeting on Mondays beginning May 6 are: a Beginner class from 1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m., activity number 39184 and an Intermediate class is offered from 2 to 3 p.m., activity number 39185. Meeting on Tuesdays beginning May 7 are: an Advanced Beginner class from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m., activity number 39186 and an Advanced class from 2 to 3 p.m., activity number 39187. 

May 6 & ongoing - Games: Board Game Bonanza (Ages 50 and Older)

  • Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Wednesdays, 1 to 3 p.m., $1 - NEW! Gather around for a board game bonanza! Our meetup is a haven for board game enthusiasts of all levels and offers a space to play, connect, and discover new favorites! Come alone or bring a friend! Play one of our games or bring one of your own! Join us and let the games begin! $1 drop-in fee recommended. Activity number 38897. 

May 7 - Technology: Small Group Computer or Cell Phone Tutoring (Ages 50 and Older) 

  • Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 10 a.m. to Noon, $25 per person, $29 nonresidents - Join our technology instructor in a small group setting to help you learn, work, create, navigate, and thrive in today’s digital world! This class offers you the opportunity to work and practice with your device while having our instructor available to answer questions and provide guidance. Class capacity will be maxed at five participants to ensure individual focus and assistance. Participant is required to bring personal laptop, tablet, or cell phone to session. Please know the user IDs and passwords associated with your account if applicable. Activity number 39105. 

May 7 & ongoing - Crafts: Caring Hands Knitting Group (Ages 50 and Older)

  • Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Tuesdays, 1 to 3 p.m., FREE - 1st of a new season! Join this generous group of individuals who knit and crochet hats for charity. Free lessons given to beginners. The Roeland Park Community Center accepts yarn, knitting needles, and hat donations year-round from those unable to attend meetings. Activity number 34043. May 7 - Gardening: Growing Vegetables Successfully in Kansas (Ages 50 and Older) 

  • Virtual Program, 2 to 3 p.m., FREE - What is this plant? How do I grow or do this? What should I put in my garden? So many questions and no one to ask until now. Join the K-State Extension Office on a variety of gardening topics and be free to discuss your gardening questions with a Master Gardener. Activity number 38993.

May 7 - Art: Groovy Art - Crocheted Granny Squares (Ages 50 and Older)

  • Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Wednesdays, 6 to 8:30 p.m.,  $40 per person, $44 nonresidents - NEW! 1st of 3 - We're celebrating the Summer of Love by channeling the groovy art of the 60s and 70s with a series of three art classes where you'll create a blast from the past! Join us in our new makerspace while you learn this basic of crocheting technique and make your own granny squares to take home, ready to be turned into other projects or stay on their own. This class is perfect for beginners as well as those who know how to crochet but just want to have fun making this iconic project. Activity number 35128.

May 7 - Concert: New Horizons Band Concert Series (All Ages) 

  • Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 7 to 8 p.m., FREE - Clear your calendars & don’t miss this performance by members of the New Horizons Band as they make beautiful music together. This top-notch entertainment is free of charge. Advanced registration is not required. Activity number 34054.

May 8 - Kansas City Symphony Concert in the Park (All Ages) 

  • Meadowbrook Park Great Lawn, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 6 to 7 p.m., FREE - Musicians from the Kansas City Symphony will be performing neighborhood concerts in JCPRD parks, most with the symphony’s Mobile Music Box stage. All events are weather permitting. 

May 8 - Early Learning: Cooks and Books (Ages 2-5 with an Adult)

  • Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave, Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., $4 per person, $5 nonresidents - Enjoy the reading of a favorite children’s book then make a tasty treat! Program includes snack. Activity number 39216.

May 8 - Museum: Retro Storytime - “The Three Bears” (All Ages) 

  • Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 10 to 10:45 a.m., $2 per person, $1.60 museum members - 1st of a new season! Preschoolers love stories from long ago, read by a special guest from the 1950s All-Electric House! Craft activity included after the story ends. Illustrated by Feodor Rojankovsky, this classic Little Golden Book edition of the famous folk tale has brought Goldilocks and the three bears to life since 1948. Cut and color your own set of characters from the book after the story! Activity number 35143. 

May 9 - Special Populations: Bingo - May (Ages 18 & Older)

  • Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., 6 to 7 p.m., $5 per person - Join us for Bingo! A fun-filled evening with friends plus amazing prizes! You must have current SOKS registration and Health History forms on file to participate in this activity. Participants are responsible for calling the Rainout Line at 913-686-6030, x14# for any update or cancelation of this activity. Activity number 35053. JCPRD’s Special Populations programs provide fun, educational, and socializing activities for members of the Johnson County community with special needs.

May 10 - Art: Oodles of Doodles (Ages 3-7 with an Adult)

  • Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10:15 to 11 a.m., $20 per child, $22 nonresidents - Bring your budding artists to the Art Studio for a mini drawing project made just for them. We’ll explore different drawing materials and learn about lines and shapes while building on early learning skills during this mini class. Students will need an adult to attend class with them. May 10 - Art: Petite Picassos (Ages 3-7 with an Adult)

  • Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 9:15 to 10 a.m., $20 per child, $22 nonresidents - Let’s paint like Picasso! During this pint-sized art class, we’ll learn about painting with watercolors, tempera, chalk, and more. Students will need an adult to attend class with them. Activity number 33571. 

May 10 - Adventure Walk: Coffee Creek Streamway Park (Ages 50 and Older) 

  • Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., $20 per person, $22 nonresidents - Wander along the streamway, amidst picturesque scenery, on this well-maintained, paved trail. Enjoy lunch at a nearby shelter after our hike. Please pack a lunch. Activity number 39059. 

May 10 - Special Event: Hand & Foot Tournament (Ages 50 and Older) 

  • Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, 1 to 4 p.m., $10 per person, $11 nonresidents - Calling all Hand & Foot Players. Clean meld! Dirty meld! Bonus points! Tournament includes random partner assignment and prizes for the top teams! Snacks and refreshments served. Cost of admission covers food and staff time to administer tournament. No additional charge for Hand & Foot. Activity number 38967.

May 11 - Lanesfield Historic Site - Open Hours (All Ages)

  • 18745 S. Dillie Road, Edgerton, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month, FREE - The limestone schoolhouse, the last remaining structure in the former town of Lanesfield, is the oldest operating schoolhouse in Johnson County. Students attended from 1869 - 1963 when the school closed. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The site today includes the original schoolhouse, four outbuildings, and a modern visitors center that houses the exhibit One-Room Schools in Kansas, a museum store, and restrooms.
