Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Oct. 6-12:

Oct. 3 - Kansas City Symphony Concert in the Park (All Ages) 

  • Meadowbrook Park Great Lawn, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 6 to 7 p.m., FREE
  • Musicians from the Kansas City Symphony will be performing neighborhood concerts in JCPRD parks, most with the symphony’s Mobile Music Box stage. All events are weather permitting. 

Oct. 5 - Special Event: Puppy Yoga (Ages 18 and Older) 

  • Meadowbrook Park, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10 to 11 a.m., $25 per person, $27 nonresidents
  • NEW! Puppy Yoga is a unique and heartwarming wellness program that combines the calming practice of yoga with the joy of playing with puppies. This program partners with local animal rescue organizations to offer a one-of-a-kind experience that not only promotes physical and mental well-being but also supports animal rescue efforts. Oct. 6 - Biking: Pedal Kids Mountain Bike School (Ages 6-12)

  • Shawnee Mission Park Pump Track north of Marina Parking Lot, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa, 2 to 4 p.m., 4 sessions, $175 per person, $193 nonresidents 
  • Designed for mountain bike kids 6 to 12 years old, this program takes their mountain biking journey to new heights through skills games, group rides, and time spent with our certified Pedal Kids coaches. Whether your child is a beginner seeking MTB-confidence or a more experienced rider eager to master new skills, Weekend MTB School is the perfect opportunity to learn the fundamentals or prepare to ride intermediate+ single track safely. Kids will learn a range of essential bike skills. A helmet or operational bicycle that allows the child to put their feet flat on the ground while sitting on the seat is required (rental bikes available upon request for additional fees). Activity number 39932.

Oct. 7 - Theatre: Adult Acting + Scene Study – Fall Session (Ages 18 and Older)

  • Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Mondays, 6 to 7:15 p.m., 8 sessions, $165 per person, $181 nonresidents
  • Unlock your acting potential with our dynamic adult acting class. Join us for a captivating journey into scene study, monologue work, and character development, spanning from timeless classics like Shakespeare to the exciting realm of modern and upcoming plays. In our immersive and inclusive environment, actors delve deep into the art of performance. With expert guidance, you’ll explore the intricacies of scene study, analyzing and embodying characters from both well-known masterpieces and cutting-edge contemporary works. This class will conclude with a public sharing perfect for showing off your newly-discovered acting talents. Activity number 35065.

Oct. 7 - Make: Upcycled Wardrobe (Ages 16 and Older)

  • Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Mondays, 6 to 8:30 p.m., 3 sessions, $88 per person, $97 nonresidents
  • NEW! Grab your unworn clothing from the back of the closet that you haven’t been able to part with and work with the instructor to brainstorm and complete an upcycling project to bring new life and purpose to your clothing item. Students need beginner to advanced machine sewing skills and must have working knowledge of sewing machines. Activity number 39471.

Oct. 7 - Museum: Sensory Friendly Monday (All Ages)

  • Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 9 a.m. to Noon, $4 per person for ages up to 18, $6 per person for ages 18 to 59, and $5 per person for ages 60 and older 
  • Come enjoy the Johnson County Museum and KidScape in a comfortable, low-sensory environment. This limited-occupancy session is designed specifically for children with sensory processing differences and Autism Spectrum Disorders, and their families. We welcome visitors of all abilities and museum experience. We also welcome hand fidgets, comfort items, weighted blankets and vests, and mobility devices. Activity number 39766. Oct. 8 - Concert: New Horizons Band Concert Series (All Ages) 

  • Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 7 to 8 p.m., FREE
  • Clear your calendars and don’t miss this performance by members of the New Horizons Band as they make beautiful music together. This top-notch entertainment is free of charge. Advanced registration is not required. Activity number 40419.

Oct. 9 - Museum: Retro Storytime - “The Happy Man and His Dump Truck” (All Ages) 

  • Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 10 to 10:45 a.m., $2 per person, $1.60 museum members
  • Preschoolers love stories from long ago, read by a special guest from the 1950s All-Electric House! A craft activity is included after the story ends. Originally published in 1950, this book tells the story of a happy man who thrills a group of farm animals when he takes them for a joy ride in his dump truck! Activity number 39771.

Oct. 9  - Free Music Group Activity by Stepping Stones KC (All Ages)

  • Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, select Wednesdays, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. 
  • NEW! Children will have a wide variety of opportunities to build early skills in our fun and evidence-based groups. Activities will include singing, music exploration, stories, dancing/movement, chants, instrument play, and more. This group is all about interacting and connecting with others, while promoting brain development based on the individual needs of the children involved. Led by a Board-Certified Music Therapist from Stepping Stones KC. Activity number 40767. Registration is not required, but registering in advance at steppingstoneskc.com/freegroups is recommended. 

Oct. 11  - Gymnastics: Cartwheel Clinic (Ages 6-12)

  • Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., $16 per person, $18 nonresidents
  • This co-ed skill clinic is designed for participants interested in improving or mastering their cartwheel. Emphasis will be placed on progressive drills and technique. When possible, participants will be grouped based on age and ability level. Activity number 39605.

Oct. 11  - Special Event: Gamin’ with the Grandkids (Ages 5 and Older with 50 and Older)

  • New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Pkwy., near Gardner, 2 to 3:30 p.m., $8 per person, $9 nonresidents
  • School is out for the day!! Join us for a fun afternoon with your grandkids with icebreakers, games, bingo and more. A refreshing experience of making memories filled with laughter and excitement. Light refreshments served. Cost of admission covers food and staff time to administer the bingo program. No additional charge for bingo. Activity number 40388.

Oct. 11 - Camp: Mrs. Goetsch's Fall Fun Day Camp (Ages 5-9)

  • Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., $75 per person, $82 nonresidents
  • Join Mrs. Goetsch for a one-day fun camp on your child’s day off from school! Campers will engage in fall themed hands-on learning activities with pumpkins, apples, and a sprinkle of Halloween. Campers will need to bring their own lunch, snack, and water bottle. All other materials will be provided! Dress to mess! Activity number 40439.
