JoCo observes Mental Illness Awareness Week

According to Mental Health America, nearly one in five American adults will have a diagnosable mental health condition in any given year. Mental illness does not discriminate; it can affect anyone regardless of their background, age, geography, income, social status, etc. This year, Mental Illness Awareness Week runs Oct. 3-9, and coincides with World Mental Health Day, which takes place on Oct. 10.

The stigma associated with mental illness is universal. Mental Illness Awareness Week presents a time to come together to raise awareness about mental illness, advocate for better mental health care and fight against the stigma associated with mental illness. Talking openly about mental health is one way to overcome stigma. Recognize your emotions and talk about them with those in your life with whom you feel safe. Practice kindness and provide support to those in your life by reaching out. Mental Health America shared some tips and resources on supporting others like offering to be by their side while taking care of responsibilities, keeping your word and honoring promises.
