Johnson County Government creates two new community coalitions
Johnson County community members have two new ways to contribute their time, talents and expertise to Johnson County Government.
Today, the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners voted to create two new coalitions that will convene to forward important initiatives in our community: the Sustainability Coalition and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coalition.
These groups align with the BOCC priority to provide high quality of life for all residents, which includes a safe and healthy community.
“As we continue to make health and safety a priority, we will do so through the lens of sustainability and diversity, equity and inclusion to promote a healthier environment and create a sense of belonging/connection throughout Johnson County. This will be accomplished by considering sustainability and inclusiveness when making funding and policy recommendations/decisions,” according to the BOCC’s impact statement.
The Johnson County Sustainability Coalition will encourage environmental stewardship across the Johnson County community in the face of a changing climate and advise the BOCC on sustainability policy options. Members will consist of, but not be limited to, community members, businesses, academia and sustainability professionals.
The Johnson County Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coalition will foster an inclusive community where all people are connected, safe, and have a sense of belonging and aims to cultivate a welcoming, diverse community where all people are valued.
Each coalition will have up to 15 members. Appointments will be made by the BOCC chair and approved by the full board. For each coalition, the BOCC will appoint a board member as a liaison, and the county manager will assign an executive sponsor to support the coalition’s work. Those who are interested can visit boards.jocogov.org to apply for these or other boards.
“These two coalitions will add tremendous value to the work our Johnson County Government is already doing in these arenas,” said Johnson County BOCC Chairman Mike Kelly. “By creating a framework where community members who have expertise in these areas can provide input and guidance, we can save taxpayer resources and improve our quality of life while making Johnson County a more sustainable and inclusive community.”
