Johnson County Mental Health Center to rededicate Teri Zenner Memorial Garden on May 20

Flowers in multiple colors, a plaque for Teri Zenner Memorial Garden and a photo of Teri Zenner and her husband, Matt

On Friday, May 20, Johnson County Mental Health Center will rededicate a garden planted in honor of Teri Zenner, a staff member who was killed by a client during a home visit in 2004. The rededication will begin at 2 p.m. at The Recovery Place, 11120 W. 65th St., Shawnee.

Four speakers will reflect on Teri’s life and legacy as the garden is rededicated:

  • Chairman Ed Eilert, Johnson County Board of County Commissioners
  • Commissioner Becky Fast, Johnson County Board of County Commissioners, District 1
  • Tim DeWeese, Johnson County Mental Health Center Director
  • Matt Zenner, Teri’s husband, who advocated for legislation requiring safety training for social workers

Inspired by Teri’s passion for helping others, the garden is being rededicated in May during Mental Health Awareness Month, an annual observance raising awareness, providing support and resources, and reducing stigma around mental health challenges. The garden was originally dedicated in 2006.

Media are welcome to attend and cover the rededication event. To arrange interviews in advance, please contact Nathan Carter at (913) 826-1631 or nathan.carter@jocogov.org.
