The Johnson County Housing Authority has recently expanded to include the Foster Youth to Independence Vouchers. This essential program aims to support young adults exiting the foster care system, providing them with the stability and security they need.

According to Foster Adopt Connect, from July 2023-June 2024, 434 youth aged out of foster care in Kansas – including 23 in Johnson County. Transitioning out of foster care often leads to instability, with 46% of these young individuals reporting experiences of homelessness by age 26.

The Foster Youth to Independence Voucher stands out from traditional housing vouchers because it offers comprehensive wraparound case management services, designed to help young adults achieve financial stability and independence.

Johnson County currently has nine Foster Youth to Independence Vouchers available for landlords or property managers of one- or two-bedroom housing units. If interested, you can contact Jessa Molina at jessa.molina2@jocogov.org or 913-715-6618 for more information.

  • Financial Stability: The wraparound services include financial literacy programs, budgeting assistance and connections to employment opportunities. This support is crucial for young adults transitioning out of foster care, helping them build a strong foundation for future financial independence.
  • Continuous Guidance: Case managers offer ongoing guidance and mentorship, helping these young adults navigate challenges and make informed decisions. This continuous support can have significant impact their ability to maintain stable housing and achieve long-term goals.
