Johnson County recognizes the important work of volunteers during National Volunteer Week
This week, Johnson County shows its gratitude to all those who serve our community. Last Thursday, April 14, the Board of County Commissioners proclaimed April 17-23 National Volunteer Week in Johnson County.
Volunteers play a vital role in our community, and their selflessness and dedication help support those in need throughout the county – whether it’s food assistance, nonprofit work, military service or another valuable service.
Johnson County Government also relies on volunteers to support many of its functions, from volunteer boards and commissions to programs and services that support public needs. In 2021, volunteers filled 312 positions on county boards and commissions, and 11,013 volunteers for county programs and services together served more than 240,000 hours.
Volunteering with Johnson County
There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available with Johnson County Government. Overall, volunteers support 11 different departments and agencies, including:
- Developmental Supports: Supporting the day-to-day needs of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Park & Recreation District: Providing park maintenance, community relations, Theatre in the Park support and more.
- K-State Research and Extension: Offering programming assistance as a gardener, naturalist, educator or another role.
- Aging and Human Services: Helping older adults and others in need of assistance with food, transportation and more.
Aging and Human Services depends on volunteers to support several of its key programs, including Catch-a-Ride and Home-Delivered Meals. These programs assist some of the county’s most vulnerable populations and would not be possible without volunteers.
Catch-a-Ride is supported by volunteers who offer rides to older adults, those with disabilities and others with transportation needs.
Home-Delivered Meals is supported by volunteers who deliver hot meals to homebound residents ages 60 and older.
Thank you to all who volunteer with these programs and others for your dedication to the Johnson County community. Looking for a way to serve? Learn more about volunteer opportunities with Johnson County at jocogov.org/volunteer.
