This week, Johnson County recognizes the work of volunteers across the community.

At last Thursday’s Board of County Commissioners meeting, the BOCC proclaimed the week of April 16, 2023 as National Volunteer Week in Johnson County.

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme, “Volunteering Weaves Us Together,” is an opportunity to shine a light on the people and causes that inspire us to serve.

Jorge Gaona, volunteer and programs coordinator, Johnson County Corrections Volunteer Community, and Anna Collins, volunteer and Catch-a-Ride coordinator, Johnson County Aging and Human Services, accepted the proclamation alongside volunteers and other volunteer coordinators.

Volunteers play a vital role in our community, and their selflessness and dedication help support those in need throughout the county – whether it’s food assistance, nonprofit work, military service or another valuable service.

Johnson County Government also relies on volunteers to support many of its functions. In 2022, Johnson County had 5,489 volunteers who spent 829,017 hours serving nine departments. Using the independent sector ($29.95/hour), volunteers contributed nearly $25 million in service to the county.

Johnson County is recognizing volunteers all month long during National Volunteer Month. See what it’s like to volunteer with Aging and Human Services, Developmental Supports and the Johnson County Library in this JoCo Magazine article.

In addition to those departments, the county relies on the work of more than 3,000 election workers for elections to run smoothly. You can learn more about their efforts in this JoCo Magazine article.
