Johnson County to send out notice of proposed property tax increase and public hearings
On or before Aug. 10, Johnson County will be sending out more than 230,000 notices of proposed property tax increases and public hearings to property owners as required by Kansas law.
The law requires counties to send taxpayers a notification of the revenue neutral rate compared to the proposed tax rates for each taxing entity that exceeds its revenue neutral rate.
The revenue neutral tax rate represents the mill levy rate that would generate the same property tax revenue as levied the previous year, based on the current tax year’s June 1 certified assessed valuation. The notices provide the dates, times and locations for public hearings to be held by each taxing authority intending to exceed their revenue neutral rate.
In June, a special legislative session focusing on property tax relief was held, approving an increase to the school levy exemption from $44,702 to $75,000 of appraised value, resulting in a $172.50 credit for qualifying properties. The new exemption amount is reflected in the 2024 school general taxing authority details.
As a reminder, the notices are not bills, and should not be paid. Property taxes are calculated Nov. 1, and the actual tax may increase or decrease from these estimates. Property tax statements will be issued later in November. First-half tax payments are due on or before Dec. 20.
New this year, property owners can print their notices by searching their property by quick reference number or address on our website. This feature will be available later next week. For additional information, please visit www.jocogov.org/estimatedtaxnotice.
