Johnson County has partnered with InterUrban ArtHouse on a rotating art exhibition in the Johnson County Administration Building, 111 S. Cherry St. in Olathe.

The exhibition space is located on the building’s main level. The rotating exhibition showcases local artists' work and brings a vibrant and diverse array of art to the community.

“We’ve been talking with the county for years about the importance of public art and building bridges between the arts community and public spaces like this, and now it’s come to fruition,” said Angi Hejduk, CEO of InterUrban ArtHouse.

The exhibits will rotate every four months, with a total of six planned annually. They provide an opportunity to experience a variety of artistic styles and mediums.

The first exhibition is now on display. This exhibition features paintings by artists Taj Mattingly and Kwanza Humphrey.

Mattingly’s works are located near the Johnson County Square entrance and display numerous animals, from an octopus to a cheetah to an owl.

Mattingly injured his dominant hand in an accident in 2016, which led him to rethink the way he creates art. Some of the works in this exhibition are a result of that.

“I hope the art gives people a chance to take a breath and enjoy something they weren’t expecting in the middle of their day,” said Mattingly.

Humphrey’s works, located near the front entrance, feature portraits of people from underrepresented areas. He says he likes to represent people from his community and give them a light in the world.

“I hope people see themselves in the art. I hope they learn to appreciate all walks of life and understand that we’re all in this together,” said Humphrey.

If you’d like to come view the art, the Administration Building is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The works are all for sale through the InterUrban ArtHouse.
