An additional budget hearing will take place for Fire District No. 2, Fire District No. 2 Bond H and Fire District No. 2 Bond I on Thursday, Aug. 24 at 9:30 a.m. during the Board of County Commissioners meeting.
Public hearings for the budget are required each year. Because the county is intending to exceed the revenue neutral rate, revenue neutral rate hearings are also required. This means that the county’s total property tax revenue is expected to increase.
In early August, the county sent more than 240,000 estimated tax notices to property owners as required by Kansas law. Learn more about the estimated tax notices, which include information on specific property values and taxes.
Following the public hearings, the Board is then scheduled to adopt the final budget on Aug. 31. By state law, Kansas counties must adopt and file by Oct. 1.
The 2024 budget process began in May. County Manager Penny Postoak Ferguson presented a proposed version of the budget to the Board on May 18, and the Board then set the maximum proposed budget on June 29.
The proposed budget includes an estimated mill levy of 24.358 mills, a decrease of 0.250 mills. The budget totals $1.79 billion, with the proposed Capital Improvement Program totaling $384.4 million.
