Solid Waste

Johnson County Department of Health and Environment is responsible for planning for the future of solid waste in Johnson County and the development of the Solid Waste Management Plan. Staff also inspect and monitor solid waste facilities located within Johnson County, and license the trash and recycling haulers that provide these services to residents.

Green Business Program

The Green Business Program is a voluntary recognition and assistance program which aims to work with businesses, schools, places of worship, and other commercial entities to reduce waste and improve sustainability. Qualifying partners can also be recognized as a Johnson County Certified Green Business.

Drop off your old or unwanted household chemicals, paint, and more at the new Household Hazardous Waste facility.

Swimming Pools

Johnson County Health and Environment inspects public and semi-public swimming pools, spas, and beaches in cities that have adopted the Environmental Sanitary Code. Johnson County provides education, inspects, and licenses all of these facilities in order to protect the health and safety of the public.

Environmental Complaints

Report issues, concerns, and complaints to the Johnson County Environmental Division concerning air quality, illegal dumping, public swimming pools and spas, septic systems, solid waste, water quality, and other.

Septic Systems

The On-Site Sewage Treatment Systems Program protects the health and environment of Johnson County citizens by ensuring that on-site septic systems are properly designed and operated. The program inspects new residential and commercial on-site septic systems, existing commercial systems, and existing residential systems subject to property transactions. The program also investigates complaints about malfunctioning septic systems.

Sustainability Consulting

Johnson County Department of Health and Environment staff provide free waste diversion assistance and sustainability consulting to businesses, schools, restaurants, and other commercial entities. Qualifying organizations may be eligible to receive up to $500 in supplies to assist in waste reduction efforts.
