Events find new ways to celebrate
Things will be different this fall and winter, but the 50 Plus Program of the Johnson County Park and Recreation District has found new ways to celebrate old favorites.
Event marks solstice of winter
Johnson County residents of all ages are invited to take a break from the busy holiday festivities and celebrate the winter solstice from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. K-7 Highway, Olathe.
Event features storytelling
The International Day of Storytelling will be celebrated from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 21 at the Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. K-7 Highway, Olathe.
Eugene Lipscomb receives leadership award
In an outdoor ceremony on Sept. 25, the Johnson County Commission on Aging (COA) presented the Peg Deaton Leadership in Aging Award to Eugene Lipscomb.

Diabetes Prevention Program plans classes
The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment has new Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) classes starting soon, both in-person and virtually.
County parks begin winter hours on Nov. 1
Winter hours of 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. go into effect Nov. 1 for many Johnson County Park and Recreation District parks through Feb. 28.
Honoring all our warriors
Almost 50 years ago, the final American troops left South Vietnam on March 29, 1973 with scenes of chaos in Saigon, the capital, as the U.S. involvement in the war came to an end. Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City, fell two years later, ending the war after 19 years, five months.
County bonds save millions through low-interest rates
On Oct. 15, the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners authorized a series of bond sales to refinance existing debt in light of current lower market interest rates, saving taxpayers millions of dollars.
