Bridging the Gap

Two older women sitting on furniture in a living room speaking with a teenage girl.

Research has shown that older adults experience higher feelings of loneliness and isolation, leading to increased health and safety issues. The Bridging the Gap program brings together Johnson County, Kansas high school students and residents of long-term care facilities to build social connections.

Participating students hear life stories and gain advice from older community members; all while helping older residents develop social interactions. All interviews between the student and resident are audio recorded and can be used for academic projects, such as the school newspaper, yearbook or other classroom assignments. Both the student and the older adult are provided a copy of the interview as a keepsake.

Since the program began in 2023, participants have praised the conversations and the personal connections formed, with many expressing a desire to participate again. Their feedback and ongoing connections with interviewees highlight the program's powerful impact in bridging the gap between generations.
