How to Apply
1-Day Permit
One-day permits are valid ONLY to take a vehicle from where it is currently parked to the vehicle inspection station and back again.
To apply for a 1-Day Permit, bring the following documents to either the Mission or Olathe Motor Vehicle office:
- Vehicle title
- Proof of insurance

60-Day Permit
A 60-day temporary permit may be obtained for up to 60 days from the vehicle purchase date.
To apply for a 60-Day Permit, the purchaser must bring the following documents to either the Mission or Olathe Motor Vehicle office:
- The original title that has been signed over to the buyer.
- Proof of insurance.
- Notarized lien release, if applicable.
- The purchaser may give someone Power of Attorney to process the transaction on their behalf.

Lost or Stolen Plate or Decal
If your license plate or decal is lost or stolen, file a report with the local city police department where the loss or theft occurred.*
To obtain a replacement plate, the registered owner must bring the following documents to either the Mission or Olathe Motor Vehicle office:
- The police report.
- Current registration.
- Current insurance information.
- The registered owner may give someone Power of Attorney to process the transaction on their behalf.

Transfer Plates
If you are an established resident, you may transfer a valid license plate from a previously owned vehicle to a new vehicle for the remainder of your registration period.
To be eligible to transfer your license plate:
- Sell or trade your previous vehicle within 60 days of buying the new one.
- Get a 60-day permit from a Kansas motor vehicle dealer or the Motor Vehicle Department to drive the new vehicle while you are waiting to dispose of the old one.
- When making out the paperwork to license your new vehicle, your name must be exactly the same as on your old title.
To transfer plates, bring the following documents to either the Mission or Olathe Motor Vehicle Office after reserving a place in line:
- The current registration from the sold vehicle. If you no longer have the current registration, a duplicate can be obtained at the Motor Vehicle Department for $1.00.
- Bring required fees.

You may owe vehicle property tax, based on the new vehicle make, model and year. For more information, visit our Fees and Payment Options page or the Kansas Dept. of Revenue Vehicle Property Tax Calculator.
In addition, you may have to pay a supplementary licensing fee if the new vehicle weighs more than the old one. For more information visit our Fees and Payment Options page or call the Motor Vehicle Department office.

Antique or Disabled Personalized Plates
State law requires that each personalized plate is unique in the State of Kansas. Check Personalized Plate Availability (ks.gov) before completing a Personalized Plate Application form.

In Kansas, there are a variety of unique license plate designs available to choose from.
