Firearms & Toolmarks

The Firearms and Toolmarks section of the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office Crime Lab is responsible for the examination of firearms, bullets, cartridge cases, ammunition components, tools, toolmarks, defaced serial numbers on firearms, and fabrics with bullet defects to determine approximate distance.

Digital Evidence

The Digital Evidence section of the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office Crim Lab provides services that include identification, collection, preservation, analysis, and reporting of data stored on evidence in an electronic format.

Controlled Substances

The Controlled Substances section of the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office Crime Lab tests a variety of evidentiary items for the presence of controlled substances and new designer drugs (which may or may not be controlled). Items tested include powders, liquids, plant material, pills, capsules, pipes, and various forms of paraphernalia.

Biology/DNA

The Biology/DNA section of the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office examines items of evidence for the presence of biological material and develops DNA profiles from the evidence.

The Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office compiles reports for the Attorney General, Professional Standards and general department reports on an annual basis.

Sheriff's Records

The Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Central Record Division serves as a repository for all records managed and generated by the Sheriff’s Office.

Investigations

The Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff’s Office provides general and specialized investigative services throughout Johnson County based upon the need for countywide jurisdiction to conduct an investigation and upon the availability of investigative resources in a local police department.

Northeast Kansas Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force

The mission of the Task Force is to provide a comprehensive and multi-jurisdictional effort to reduce the level of drug trafficking and the availability of illegal drugs in the region. The Task Force currently conducts criminal investigations within the Kansas jurisdictions of Johnson County, Miami County, and Franklin County.

Warrant Unit

The Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff’s Office Warrant Unit is primarily charged with locating and apprehending persons wanted by written order of the Johnson County, Kansas District Court. These orders include Felony, Misdemeanor and Civil arrest warrants.
