Volunteer spotlight shines on Kay Voorhees at SHICK

In July 2023, the Johnson County Area Agency on Aging once again began providing Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas. SHICK counseling was previously provided by the AAA until 2014. One familiar face with SHICK counseling in Johnson County is Kay Voorhees.

The Johnson County Commission on Aging will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, and April 10 in the Johnson County Medical Examiners building, 11894 S. Sunset Drive, Olathe.

Campaign celebrates Senior Nutrition Program

The annual nutrition education and information campaign is organized by the Administration of Community Living’s Administration on Aging and observed in March. Since 1972, the National Senior Nutrition Program has supported nutrition services for older adults nationwide. Funded by the Older Americans Act, these local programs serve as hubs where people 60+ find healthy meals and other vital services that strengthen social connections, promote well-being through sound eating and physical activity habits.

March is National Social Worker Month

Within the Johnson County Area Agency on Aging, there is a team of Eligibility and Options Specialists who are comprised of professionals from a variety of educational backgrounds, including social workers.

Protecting health in changing weather

Thunderstorms, floods and tornadoes are all possible in Johnson County this time of year. Planning for how to maintain and protect your health in a natural disaster or emergency is an important but often overlooked part of the preparedness process.

It’s never too late to get moving. The first Wednesday in April is National Walking Day that has been sponsored by the American Heart Association since 2007.
