The application window for a new property tax relief program for adults 65 and older who meet income requirements will be opening in January.

Those who qualify for the program will be eligible to receive a payment of up to $200 in 2024 after the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners approved a pilot program in the 2024 budget.

The program will also be available to disabled veterans who meet the other criteria as well.

The application window for the program will be open from Jan. 15-April 15, 2024. During that period, those who meet the criteria can submit an application by mail, email or in person. Forms will be available online at jocogov.org/propertytaxrelief or in person. Residents will need to provide proof of income and documentation of military disability, if applicable.

In order to receive a property tax relief payment, participants in the program must:

• Be a resident of Johnson County
• Own and occupy their home
• Be age 65 or older, OR be a disabled veteran (100% or more military disability)
• Have a home with a maximum 2023 appraised value of $384,600
• Be current on property tax payments for their residence
• Be at or below the Very Low Income limits set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

The program will be in a pilot stage in 2024. The amount of relief available will depend on the number of qualified applicants received. The funds available will be distributed among residents who qualify, but payments will not exceed $200 or the county’s portion of the resident’s property tax bill.

Residents who would qualify for this program may also qualify for other programs to receive relief on their property tax bills as well. Some Johnson County cities offer programs to their residents. Check your city’s website to see if a program is available.
