Four ways to spring into health
Spring is almost here! The start of a new season can be an opportunity to adjust your routine and refocus on your health and fitness priorities. Prevent or manage chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure with these four healthy habits.
Eat Heart Healthy Foods
Make sure your diet includes fruits, veggies, low-fat dairy, fiber-rich whole grains and lean meats, including fish. To learn more about a heart healthy diet and try some yummy recipes, attend a free heart health nutrition seminar at the Central Resource Library, 9875 W. 87thSt., Overland Park. The seminar will be led by Johnson County Department of Health and Environment dieticians and community health workers.
- Tuesday, March 28, noon-1 p.m.: Lowering Sodium Intake
- Tuesday, April 25, noon-1 p.m.: Shopping, Preparing & Cooking Food for Better Blood Pressure Management
- Tuesday, May 23, noon-1 p.m., Heart Healthy Eating for Life
Know Your Numbers
High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” because it often has no warning signs or symptoms and many people do not know they have it. There’s only one way to know whether you have high blood pressure— have a health professional measure it. Measuring your blood pressure is quick and painless. JCDHE community health workers provide in-person support for blood pressure management.

Move More, Sit Less
Hello, sun! The long, dark days of winter are coming to an end. It’s time to get outside and enjoy the miles of trails and beautiful parks Johnson County has to offer. Aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, like brisk walking or bicycling, every week. Visit jcprd.com to find a trail or park near you!
Quit Tobacco Products for Good
Tobacco use greatly increases your risk for heart disease, cancer and other chronic diseases. No matter how long you’ve smoked, when you quit smoking, your risk of heart disease and stroke starts to drop.
Need help quitting? Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for free resources and support to help you be successful in your quit journey from any type of tobacco product including cigarettes, e-cigarettes and vaping products, cigars and chew.
Make just a few changes this spring to make your health a priority. Live well today to live better tomorrow!
