Fall Prevention

Fall prevention is crucial for older adults because falls can lead to serious injuries and hospital visits. Even minor falls can result in serious consequences, such as fractures or head injuries, which can significantly impact an older adult's mobility and independence. By prioritizing fall prevention strategies—like regular exercise to improve strength and balance, ensuring safe home environments, and staying up-to-date on vision and health assessments—older adults can greatly reduce their risk of falling.

Johnson County Department of Health and Environment along with our community partners offer two programs focused on fall prevention strategies.

A Matter of Balance

Many older adults experience the fear of falling. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. A Matter of Balance is an evidence-based program designed to reduce the fear of falling, increase confidence and improve activity levels among older adults. Participants who completed this class said they felt more comfortable increasing their activity and planned to continue exercising. A Matter of Balance is most appropriate for people who are: 60 or older, concerned about falls, and interested in improving flexibility, balance and strength.

Participants will learn how to:

  • View falls as controllable
  • Set goals for increasing activity
  • Make changes to reduce their fall risk at home
  • Exercise to increase strength and balance

A Matter of Balance is an 8-week workshop meeting for 2 hours each session. For more information or questions, contact Alison Wiley at 913-477-8431 or Alison.Wiley@jocoogv.org
