It’s primary election time!

Older adults vote at a polling place

Registered voters in Johnson County will soon be heading to the polls to cast their votes in the upcoming 2024 Primary Election.

This election will determine which candidates from the Democratic and Republican parties will advance to the 2024 General Election. The primary election ballot will also include the nonpartisan contest for Johnson County Commissioner in District 6.

Candidates of other recognized political parties in the State of Kansas do not run in the primary. Instead, they are nominated for the November general election by party caucus or convention. Independent candidates may only file to run for office by petition.

“Our team is dedicated to administering another fair, secure, and accurate election in Johnson County this summer,” Election Commissioner Fred Sherman said.

While the deadline to update political party affiliation has passed, voters can still update their name and address before Tuesday, July 16 by submitting a new voter registration form.

Election Day is Tuesday, Aug. 6. Johnson County voters have three ways to cast their ballot – by mail, early in-person and in-person on Election Day.

Any registered voter can request an advance voting by mail ballot at jocoelection.org/advance-voting before Tuesday, July 30. Voters with a permanent illness or disability can apply for permanent advance voting status.

In-person advance voting, which does not require an application, will begin on Saturday, July 20. Locations and hours are available at jocoelection.org/advance-voting.

Individuals wanting to cast their ballot in person on Election Day must do so between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. at their assigned polling place which can be found at jocoelection.org/VoterView. Sample ballots can be found on the same website on July 1. These sample ballots can familiarize voters with their candidate choices.

Kansas law requires voters to present photographic identification when voting in person. For further details, visit sos.ks.gov or call the Johnson County Election Office at 913-715-6800. Additional information about the 2024 primary election can be found at jocoelection.org.
