According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three people in the United States will develop shingles (herpes zoster). Risk factors include having had chickenpox and getting older.

If you’re 50 and older and uninsured, the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment has free shingles (Shingrix) vaccines available. It is a two-dose series given two to six months apart. The vaccine costs $192 without insurance, but is free for a limited time.

Immunizations are available at the department’s walk-in clinics in Olathe (11875 S. Sunset Drive) or Mission (6000 Lamar Ave.) while supplies last. No appointment is needed.

A $20 administrative fee applies for each dose given.
