Program expands tax relief Your Chairman to seniors, disabled vets

By Andy Hyland

The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners voted in October to remove a $200 limit on a property tax relief program for senior s and disabled veterans, allowing residents who qualify to access additional  savings on their property tax bills.

The application window for the property tax relief program for adults 65 and older who meet income requirements will open in January . Those who qualify for the program will be eligible to receive a payment in 2025 that will help offset the county’s portion of their property tax bills.

During the application period, those who meet the criteria can submit an application by mail, email or in person.

Additional information is available under the “Johnson County Senior Disabled Veteran Property Tax Relief Program” heading at www.jocogov.org/PropertyTaxRelief.

Residents will need to provide proof of income and documentation of military disability, if applicable. In order to receive a property tax relief payment, participants in the program must:

  • Be a resident of Johnson County
  • Own and occupy their home
  • Be age 65 or older, OR be a disabled veteran
  • Have a home with a maximum 2024 appraised value of $384,600
  • Be current on property tax payments for their residence
  • Be at or below the Very Low Income limits set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

The amount of relief available will depend on the number of qualified applicants received. The funds available will be distributed among residents who qualify, but payments will not exceed the county’s portion of the resident’s property tax bill.

Residents who would qualify for this program may also qualify f or other programs to receive relief on their property tax bills as well. Some Johnson County cities offer programs to their residents. Check your city ’s website to see if a program is available. Additional information on other state programs is available to Johnson County residents at jocogov.org/propertytaxrelief.
