Fieldhouse expands its offerings

Since its opening in 2011, New Century Fieldhouse in Gardner has become one of Johnson County’s premier indoor multi-use facilities.

A key section of its offerings is the diverse range of programs provided by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s 50 Plus Department. These include pickleball, fitness classes, bingo, card and game drop-ins as well as special events. With plans to introduce even more programs, the 50 Plus Department is excited to announce the addition of Dave Driscoll as the new program coordinator at the fieldhouse.

“I am thankful for the opportunity to work with the 50 Plus Department. There are many great programs offered already, and I look forward to serving our amazing 50 Plus community. New Century Fieldhouse is an excellent facility, with everything you need to build successful programs,” Driscoll said.

The fieldhouse features a large multi-purpose room and party rooms, used by the 50 Plus Department to host activities such as pitch, mah jongg, hand and foot, Mexican train dominos and crochet.

“It is very rewarding to provide a place for people to gather and enjoy their favorite activities. We are always looking for more people to join,” added Driscoll.

Pickleball is a fantastic way to stay active. The fieldhouse features six courts with open play offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Players are invited to bring their paddles and join in the fun for only $4. Thinking of starting to play this popular sport? Pickleball beginner lessons are offered every month with instructor Bob Kolenda, who said, “New Century Fieldhouse is a very friendly and fun environment to play pickleball. This is a great facility to play at.”

Looking for low-intensity fitness classes? Join our Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, hosted at 11:30 a.m. every Monday and at 10:15 a.m. every Wednesday and Friday.

“My students tell me that social interaction is just as important as the fitness aspect of these classes. They are part of a community and feel supported,” said instructor Lucinda Grove. The department also plans the introduction of chair yoga, with classes starting Friday, Sept. 29, and Dec. 6.

If you just need to stretch your legs, community walking on the turf field is offered for free from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Bring a friend or just come for a walk; it’s a great way to stay healthy.

With plans to offer even more events, the 50 Plus Department is introducing new activities coming this fall, such as “Let’s Get Trivial,” “Fresh Flavor Recipe Swap” and “Gamin’ with the Grandkids.” They will also be hosting two bingo events on Tuesday, Oct. 15, and Thursday, Dec. 19.

“Our aim is to create fresh and enjoyable experiences that help build lasting memories with friends and family, filled with laughter and excitement,” Driscoll said.
