Monarch butterfly on a yellow flower

The Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s 50 Plus Department is partnering with the Ernie Miller Nature Center this fall to offer unique live-animal encounters and educational sessions on nature.

The fall partnership kicks off from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept 20 at Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse with a discussion about the monarch migration. Discover the remarkable journey of the monarch butterfly and learn about the citizen science program that involves capturing, tagging and releasing these butterflies as they travel to Mexico. The program will also include a live demonstration of monarch tagging. Preregistration is required. Cost is $8/$9 for nonresidents.

A birds and bagels program will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 23 at Roeland Park Community Center. Explore how birds of prey are equipped with specialized features like talons, beaks and wings, and how these adaptations make them skilled hunters. Coffee and bagels will be served. Preregistration is required. Cost is $10/$11 for nonresidents.

Finally, a return to Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse occurs from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 5 to see owls from the Ernie Miller Nature Center and learn about their unique adaptations. Preregistration is required. Cost is $15/$16 for nonresidents.
